In memory of

Renate Herta Roddau

March 15, 1932 -  February 15, 2019

It is with great sadness that the family of Renate announces her passing on February 15, 2019 at Centenary Hospital, predeceased by her husband Wolfgang. Renate was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in September of 2018 and has bravely fought before succumbing to her illness.

As a young woman she migrated to Canada with her young family. She and her husband became entrepreneurs opening Durham Business Machines in Ajax which later moved to Pickering on Brock Road. They bought their home in Pickering in the early 60s where they lived until retirement before relocating to Elliot Lake.

Together they enjoyed the outdoors camping and later travelling across Canada and the USA in their RV. They made many friends along the way. Renate had a passion for reading and enjoyed writing to her friends about her adventures.

She enjoyed taking pictures of wildlife and the wonders of nature. Three years ago she relocated to Scarborough to be close to family, and many in the lakeside community of Guildwood may remember seeing her going for a brisk morning hike down to the lake. She was always on hand to run errands for other seniors.

Renate was excellent at baking and family and friends could always expect a fresh cup of coffee and her delicious baked treats when they visited.

She was a kind and loving person who will be sadly missed by all her family and friends. Oma (grandma) as she was fondly called, you may be gone but you will never be forgotten.

Following her wishes she will be cremated and a memorial will be held on March 10, 2019 at Simple Alternative funeral home from 1PM to 3PM at 1057 Brock Road in Pickering.

The love you shared with all will keep us strong. Rest in Peace.

My sister is now back to my parents, where she longed for. It was a hard way to go
for her. But we will follow and do not know how we will bear it. Our belief may help.
So I trust in the following words of a young female priest given at a service on February 10, 2019, in my church of confirmation:

was wir hier beten.
Amen"

Nanni, so I called my sister, is back to our parents now, where she wanted to go and cried for all the time.
She has had a hard way here the last months, and God granted finally her wish to leave her life on earth.
Everyone who loved her could not help to keep her alive. She was at the end of her trip in our world.

When I joined the service in my former church, where I was confirmed in 1954, the young female priest gave us
some words to keep, wich I pass on to you here in German.

was wir hier beten. Amen“

I feel an emptiness in my heart everyday that I pass by our beloved Oma's home knowing she is no longer there.
I miss our daily phone calls and updates. I miss the excitement in her voice when she reports on one of her a new discovery by the lake--the spotting of a deer or bluejay.
Life will not be the same without her. Family was important to her and we wil all miss her and we will forever remember her.

My deepest condolences and sympathies to all of the Roddau family! I was worried as did not hear from her in awhile...
I met Renate and Wolfgang on a camp ground in Canada back in 1995. I was travelling with Evi and we only had a very small tent and it started to rain. Renate and Wolfgang invited us for a cup of hot chocolate. Ever since we have been in touch, connected via Skype and mail and letters, the real ones. We met in Germany when they passed Hannover where Evi was living at that time. Renate was always a hero to me and she will always be.
Renate, say hi to the angels. Take care!
