In memory of

Rebecca Luen-Yuen Yip

August 7, 1935 -  June 26, 2025

Rebecca Yip, treasured mother and grandmother, educator and dear friend, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Sunnybrook Hospital, following a stroke in mid-May. She was 42 days shy of her 90th birthday.

Born in Guangdong, China on August 7, 1935 to Reverend Lit Po Woo and Lit Kit Wei, she spent her formative years at the Diocesan Girls School in Hong Kong as a boarder, beginning a lifelong relationship with the school. She and loving husband Luke Yip shared a beautiful partnership for more than 50 years, having lived together in Stanley (Hong Kong), Olds (Alberta) and Toronto (Ontario). They are survived by four devoted children, daughters Florence, Michelle (Donald) and Noelle, as well as son Clement (Carolyn), and five grandchildren, Stephanie, Andrew, Christine, Karina and Theodore.

Rebecca was a cherished and respected educator. Starting as a teacher in 1958 at DGS, she would eventually go on to be the principal at Heep Yunn Primary School before returning to serve as Headmistress of the DGS Junior School for ten years from September 1989 until her retirement in April 1999.

Rebecca was beloved by her pupils and staff, and maintained numerous lifelong friendships with many of her students and colleagues. At her retirement in April 1999, the School's Parent-Teacher Association honoured her by dedicating a special shield in her name, "The Mrs. Rebecca Yip Shield", to be awarded each year to a Primary 6 student who demonstrates a strong knowledge in Scriptures and embodies Christian virtues in her conduct and service to others.

Mrs. Yip's students now live around the world and have excelled in many areas of their professional careers, leaving an extraordinary legacy. She was devoted to nurturing young students' minds, endowing the girls at her schools with confidence, patience and a love of learning. Throughout her life, she conducted herself with grace, and remained unwavering in her faith.

She now joins dear husband, Luke, at home with God.

In memory of Rebecca, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. John's Anglican Church https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-johns-anglican-willowdale/ in keeping with her lifelong commitment to service and education. The family also remains eternally grateful for the tremendous care and support of the Sunnybrook team and her caregivers.

Visitation for Rebecca will be held at the York Cemetery & Funeral Centre at 160 Beecroft Rd., Toronto on Monday, July 7, 2025 between 5 pm and 8 pm. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 8th, from 11 am to 12 pm at St. John's Anglican Church at 1087 Lillian St., Toronto, and the burial immediately after at York Cemetery. A reception will follow at York Cemetery from 1 pm to 3 pm.

Dear Family of Mrs Yip,

May God surround you all at this difficult time with His peace and may the memories of dear Mrs Yip stay with you all.
I was recruited by Mrs Yip whilst I was still living in Toronto as a fresh graduate. I went back to HK to teach at DGJS after she offered me a teaching position and have stayed in HK since then.
Her devotion to the school was exemplary (she tried to finish morning assembly in the midst of an Ménière’s attack!) and her Christmas puddings and egg nogs tradition were sadly missed after she retired.
I am sure God is welcoming her with open arms.
God Bless you all!

Sincerely,

Vera Liang-Ng

Dear Mrs. Yip, I am forever grateful for having had you as my headmistress. You have shown me what being an educator means. You made me feel understood when I fought for what's just and fair. You have instilled in me values that I still hold onto today. You will be always missed!
