At the age of 83, on a crisp autumn day, Ramchand (Lucky) Janack passed away peacefully in Toronto on October 25th 2015, with his loved ones by his bedside. His life was a wonderful journey. He was born in Port Mourant, British Guyana where he played cricket and taught at Corentyne High School before sailing to London, England in the early 60’s. He then moved and settled in Alexandria, Ontario where he enjoyed teaching math to generations of students at the local high school (GDHS) until his retirement in 1996. He felt himself lucky that teaching never felt like “work”: he encouraged his students to strive to achieve their potential; took delight in their achievements; and supported them when they struggled. He was a scholar and a gentleman with a constancy we are unlikely to see again any time soon.

Mr Janack is predeceased by his son Sunil and leaves behind many who respected and loved him. He will be sorely missed by his wife Vicki (Bhagwandai Bassit); daughter Devina and her husband Paul; son Anand and his wife Kirsten; as well as many siblings, close friends, nieces, and nephews.

He lives on, in all who had the privilege to know him, in particular his five grandchildren of whom he was immensely proud: Serena (Leeds University), Annalise (Oxford University) and the younger ones Rosie, Marek, and Mira all share his love of learning, gentle nature, and quick smile.

Viewings will be held on Friday October 30th 7-9 p.m. and Saturday October 31st 2-4 p.m. Funeral (Hindu rites) to be held on Sunday November 1st, at Meadowvale Cemetery and Visitation Centre Crematorium and Mausoleum, 7732 Mavis Rd, Brampton, ON L6Y 5L5.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
