In memory of

張國華 Quoc Hue Truong

August 22, 1950 -  July 26, 2023

With great sadness, our family announces the passing of Quoc Hue "Jimmy" Truong, 73, on July 26, 2023, in Richmond Hill, Ontario, at his home surrounded by his family after his battle with cancer.

He was born on August 22, 1950, in Phuoc Thanh town, Dong Nai Province, Vietnam, to Teochew Chinese parents Cung Truong and Trinh Ngo. He grew up in Vietnam with his older brother, older sister, and younger brother. He worked in the family business at a young age. He fondly remembers spending time with his maternal grandmother and playing with his cousins and friends.

In Ho Chi Minh City, he met his wife of 44 years, Xuan Thai Lam, and they married on January 1, 1979. In May 1979, Quoc Hue vowed to find a better life for his future family and arranged for his wife and several family members to escape Vietnam by boat. After surviving several harrowing events, they landed in Palau Tenga, Malaysia and lived in a refugee camp, where they had their first daughter, LeQuan. In the middle of winter February 1980, he and his wife arrived in Toronto, Canada, sponsored by the North York Chinese Baptist Church. They lived in North York, where Lina, SeuLeen and Lisa were born, later moving to Richmond Hill.

Quoc Hue received his nickname "Jimmy" from his colleagues at Visioneering Corp, where he worked for over 35 years. He tirelessly ensured his family had the stability and security to pursue their dreams and fulfilled his goal of giving his family a good life.

When he was not working, he loved to cook, enjoy delicious meals, share a beer, and took his family on annual trips to Niagara Falls, Edwards Garden, Ontario Place, and the CNE. He was always willing to jump into the car to make his daughters’ lives easier, whether it was to help them move out of town or a late night bus stop pick up. He instilled in his children to be humble and thoughtful, to have a good work ethic, and to put family (gaginang) above all else.

He was known as "ah-gong," "gong-gong," and "opa" to his five grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. He loved to play and care for them, share stories, life lessons, and lots of laughter.

He is survived by his loving wife, Xuan Thai Lam Truong; children: Le Quan Truong (Niels Kuhnen) of Blaricum, NL, Lina Truong (Blair Phillips) of Toronto, ON, SeuLeen Truong (James Wang) of Markham, ON, Lisa Truong of Ottawa, ON; grandchildren: Thijs Kuhnen; Wesley and Isla Phillips; and Alexander and Benjamin Wang; sister: Hung Thi Truong (Long Tran) two brothers: Hue Xuan Truong (Huong Mieu Ngo), Quang Quoc Truong (Camtu Thi Tran); as well as beloved sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Thank you to the doctors, nurses, and personal support workers at the Baruch/Weisz Cancer Centre at North York General Hospital, Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital, Home and Community Care, and Hospice Palliative Care Markham/Richmond Hill for their exceptional care.

Family and Friends are invited to the Services held at York Cemetery and Funeral Centre on August 1, 2023, at 9 am; please see details below.

In lieu of flowers, please give a gift in memory of Quoc Hue Truong to the Odette Cancer Centre Foundation or the Baruch/Weisz Cancer Centre.

Dear Family,
We are sorry for your lost.
We can not imagine the pain you are having right now.
There is a story of the Molukken of the 3 birds (duiven) who will take your father to heaven. Every time you see a bird(duif) it is perhaps a visit from heaven.
Uit het oog maar voor altijd in jullie harten.
Veel sterkte en liefde toegewenst voor de aankomende dagen.

Veel liefs Esther , Jeroen, Hannah en Sarah Mulder Kukupessy

It is terrible to miss a father and a husband. A man who did a lot for his family. We heard several stories from LeQuan. We know that all of you will miss him very much. We wish you lots of love and strength now and in the future. Greetings John & Bea Kukupessy.

Though we never had the honor of meeting in person, knowing your daughter Le Quan personally, I am certain you can now rest in eternal peace.
