In memory of

Protima Mukherjee

July 12, 1936 -  August 15, 2023

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing, on August 15, 2023, of Protima Mukherjee. She began life in India later moving to the UK and finally settling in Canada. She was the matriarch of her large extended family and a close friend to many. Boudi was an active participant in the Bengali community and a committed devotee of the Vedanta Society of Toronto.

She spent her life as an educator, first teaching within the Montessori system. Later, she obtained a diploma in Early Childhood Education and went on to teach children with special needs at Humber College. Her most cherished accomplishment was the establishment in 1977 of the ALAKENDU BODH NIKETAN RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL in Calcutta India, a facility dedicated to the education of children with mental and physical developmental delay.

At home she was the loving wife of Manindra Mukherjee (deceased) and nurturing mother to Diana (Randy Hicks) and Ashok. She was grandmother to Nicholas Grant, Nikhil, Kamila, and Mira Mukherjee and new grandchildren Ian Hicks, and Meghan Bolhuis. Recently she became a great-grandmother to Romee Bolhuis.

Generosity and service to others defined her life. She was always first to offer a helping hand to those in need. Boudi was often sought out for her counsel, guidance, and emotional support. She welcomed many new comers to Canada into her home while they established themselves in their new country.

Protima will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched. We take solace in the knowledge that she now rests in peace and that her memory will continue to live on in all of us.

My memory of Boromashi is of her gentle smile, always soft spoken (though I've her seen her be firm), gentle and loving. Have spent a lot of time with during her visits to India over the years. Last spoke to her, when I became a widow in 2016... Her warmth came through the simple phone call. She lived well, loved all and I'm certain, will be back soon to carry on the good work.
