In memory of

Prasert Butrsingkorn

March 11, 1940 -  July 22, 2023

Passed away peacefully at age 85 on July 22, 2023 at Sunnybrook’s Reactivation Care Centre. Born March 11, 1938 in Tha Uthen, Nakhon Phanom, Thailand. Prasert is survived by his wife Vimol (nee Sutirunggur) and loving daughter Vanita and son Peera (Valerie). Watching his grandchildren Simone and Jacqueline grow was one of the greatest joys in his life.

Prasert had an adventurous spirit, generous personality, and lived a remarkable life.

His career spanned different continents and climates. After graduating from Bangkok College (now Bangkok University), he worked in Bangkok and then Laos during the Vietnam war. After continuing his studies in New York City, he immigrated to Canada in the early 1970s. He practiced his vocation as a truck mechanic, including stints in the high Arctic community of Resolute, Nunavut before settling in Toronto. A few years post-retirement, Prasert became the owner and operator of Thai Satay & More restaurant in Oakville, Ontario for 10 years before permanently retiring.

Serving and uniting the Thai community in Ontario was an enduring passion of his. He founded Thai News Radio (now Thai Radio Canada) in 1998 and ran a weekly radio show for 12 years on AM 1430 on Saturday nights. It also ran on syndication and online throughout Canada. He was a founder and past President of the Thai Association of Ontario (now Thai Society of Ontario) for a number of years. He would routinely help new Canadians, often letting people stay at his house as they settled in a new country.

Prasert was a sporty person who trained in Muay Thai and takraw in his youth and went on to try his hand at skiing, fishing, piloting ultra-light planes, badminton, and golf. His love of the outdoors saw him lead multiple camping trips in his tent trailer and three different boats.

The Butrsingkorn family are forever grateful to the caring staff at RCC. They helped make his last months as comfortable and happy as possible.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation: https://www.heartandstroke.ca

On the morning of Sunday 23 July 2023, I received the deepest and saddest news that the founder of the Thai radio program in Canada had passed away.
Prasert put his heart and dedication to the Thai radio program. He owned a Thai restaurant in Oakville at that time which caused him to be very busy. But he managed to run the radio program for 12 years with love and integrity. He never missed a show during those 12 years, not once.
I met Prasert for the first time at the studio in 2004 and watched him host the Thai radio program. After that, I started as a volunteer and made it to the co-host of the program, before I took over in 2009. He became the guest speaker of the radio show for a few years after his retirement.
All those years working with him every Saturday, 2 hours each weekend, we talked about so many things: life, family, work, restaurant business and also some good ideas for Thai community. We exchanged our views openly and honestly. Prasert always gave me good advices and wisdom.
All those years that I worked with him, he never mentioned of any negative things about anyone, only good and positive things of people in the community. This makes me respect him so very much.
Prasert, you had a full life, you have good children, beautiful grandchildren and people who knew how good you were as a person and for society.
I assure you that I will keep my promise to run Thai radio program as long as I can and if there are listeners (these days, people go to YouTube and internet surfing, but there are people who have no chance to do that and not in the situation to do so).
Please know that I love and respect you. I wish and hope you find the light that will take you to the place where you will rest in peace.

THANK YOU for all your hard work founding the radio program for Thai community, THANK YOU for your kindness to me and many people in Thai community and other communities, and THANK YOU for your advices and wisdom -I have learned so much about life and society from you.
