In memory of

Asta Piil

July 19, 1935 -  April 3, 2019

With a valiant determination to stay, Asta succumbed to her illness on April 3, 2019, surrounded by her immediate family and Pastor Puusaag at Sunnybrook Hospital. Predeceased by her husband, Osvald Piil, Asta is survived by her daughters Viivi Rita (Stan) Ingrid May, grandson Matti, goddaughter Miriam, plus extended family in Canada and Estonia.

Asta was born in Väike Maarja, Estonia to Olga & Jakob Pink on July 19, 1935. The occupying Soviet armies forced their evacuation. Asta and her mother made it to Sweden while Jakob was captured. The SS Walnut ship brought Asta and fellow refugees to Pier 21 in Halifax in 1948. She excelled at accounting and worked for ITT Cannon Electric, Copp Clark & Pitman Publishing Companies. Her new life in Toronto was intrinsically woven within the fabric of the local Estonian community. The Girl Guides organization provided her with lifelong “sisters”. She volunteered at the Estonian Credit Union, loved travelling, fine food, casinos, crossword puzzles and watching the Olympics and golf.

If desired, online donations to the Estonian Foundation of Canada, ℅ Skaudid/ Gaidid Kanadas would be appreciated.
