In memory of

Philip John Sutherland

October 29, 1960 -  January 15, 2023

Phil died unexpectedly on Jan. 15, 2023. He was predeceased by his mother Shirley Whitely and father Paul Sutherland.
He is survived by his brother Mark, his aunt Geri Donnet and cousins Amanda and Jessamyn Donnet.
He was also loved and supported by his step family, Glenys Squires, Carey Hoffman, Brett Squires and Amanda Squires.

Phil was a respected and well liked member of the St.Vincent de Paul community and will be missed by so many friends. He was a kind and generous man with an incredible sense of humour. He worked as a gaffer in the film industry, and worked alongside his Dad, Paul Sutherland, on the "Once Upon a Hamster" series as well as countless other projects.

He faced many struggles in his life and even in his lowest moments relied on his sense of humour. James Gordon, a trusted and supportive friend, recalls Phil looking at him in the 14th or 15th hour of a film day saying with a smile on his face, "if my career was a horse, I'd shoot it", or handing out his business cards that had 'Comfortable with Complacency ' written under his name.

Phil's other passion was sailing and was in his 'happy place' on his boat. In James' words, " I hope you're up there sailing and at peace, my friend. You struggled so much and often quietly. You will be missed but never forgotten".

A donation in his memory to CAMH or the St. Vincent de Paul Society would be a thoughtful way to remember Phil, if desired.

Spent a large part of my life from 12 to 18 yrs old with Phil and his brother Mark. We spent most weekends at their dad's eating Paul's burnt hamburgers and watching old Fred Astair movies and hammy hamster episodes. Lots of weekends sailing and we spent a whole summmer sailing daily with the QCYC Junior Club. But as life inevitably goes we tend to go off on our own quests. Didn't see much of Phil over the last 20 yrs. Last real time spent with Phil was a week on a family Caribbean cruise in 2002. Lots of fun. Lots of memories. A good man who will be missed.

Phil seemed to have trouble with demons, from an early age but in spite of that lived a good life, caring for those who were fragile, as he well understood their lives.
Sail into the afterlife Phil, and the sunset, with the thanks of all those you helped.

Phil was my step brother in our lives since he was 14. A long time to know someone. Lots of family fun and memories at QCYC. At Xmas he would always find such fun and interesting gifts for everyone
Showed a special side of him , a kind and gentle. He loved to sail and be with his dad and learning the ropes about sailing and about the film industry
He made his dad very proud.
Phil called on me later in his life for support and I was happy to be there for him. We had lots of heart to hearts. He eventually triumphed. Loved his sense of humour, his laugh and his determination to suceed
He overcame many hurdles and so sad his life ended too soon
Will miss you. Thanks to your dear friend James who had your back and kept me in the loop. Xxxx

I was working across the road at SickKids when Phil was born at TGH and it was one of the happiest days of my life. Being able to be involved in the early years was a privilege and I loved being called Gigi. Phil overcame adversity in his life to become a kind and compassionate man and will be dearly missed.

I met Phil on the set of "Once Upon a Hamster". It was my first "real" job after film school. Phil was like an older brother to me. He used to call me "Kelly-elly-oh" :) He gave me good advice about the business, I laughed at his jokes.

After "Hammy" ended, I would see him again over the years on other productions and at a family BBQ (Glenys & Amanda Squires - I cannot remember the exact reason we were getting together? But many of the former crew from Hammy, were there)

Phil - I will imagine you sailing on heavenly seas. Rest in Peace
