In memory of

Philip Ian Mennie

August 23, 1953 -  November 20, 2023

Philip Ian Mennie
August 23, 1953 — November 20, 2023

Philip died at home in Toronto at the age of 70. The son of Andrée and Bill Mennie of Ottawa (both deceased), he is survived by his brother Bob (Barbie Marshall), his sisters Elise (Ron Duncan, deceased) and Yolande (André Martel), his nieces Isabelle and Maija (Sean Hines), and his aunts Elizabeth Mennie and Margie Conroy.

Phil was an energetic, determined and focused person who loved sports and the competitive atmosphere of the financial world. He worked as an accountant for Bay St. companies and law firms and also as an independent stockbroker. He was disciplined and rigorous not only in his profession, but also in managing a lifelong health condition, which allowed him to remain fiercely independent to the end of his life.

He had a mischievous sense of humour and loved to poke fun at the absurdities of politics and bureaucracies, while always choosing his own idiosyncratic path in the swirl of ideas and beliefs.

While living a very private life, Phil remained attached to his family and will be very much missed.

I was so sad to see that Phil had died. He was a cherished childhood friend along with his brother Bob. Phil was a natural athlete and I remember him beating a friend at tennis, a long-time tennis player, the first time he ever played.

Philip and I were boyhood friends. We met in kindergarten and a lot of one another until Grade 9, when we went off to different high schools. Phil had a great sense of humour and a quiet charisma. Many of us looked up to him.
Robert, Elise and Yolande, my belated condolences to you for your loss. I saw your parents once again, by the way, in 1976, at the National Arts Centre. They were sitting behind us and said hello. It was wonderful to speak with them after so many years. They had always been so hospitable.
I only saw Phil again once. Phil, David Aylen and I got together one evening in Toronto, in 1995 or 96. It was a very nice evening spent with boyhood friends. About two weeks ago, David informed me of Philip’s passing.
My deepest sympathies for your loss. Phil was a great guy. Those were formative years for all of us, and his friends still remember him.
