In memory of

Peter Smuk

March 27, 1928 -  July 16, 2019

Peacefully with his family at his side in his 91st year. Beloved Husband of Joan, Loving Father to Kelly & Husband Andrew, Scott & Wife Tammy, Cherished Grandfather to Matthew, Lindsay, Matthew & Sarah.
Peter was born in Timmins, Ontario. As a young boy he survived polio with minimal difficulties until later on in life. He shared many stories about growing up there. His love of the water and surrounding nature always were present. He seemed to have his share of adventures and was mischievous as young boys often are. The story of him being given money to go to town to get fresh bread for dinner is a funny one. After walking miles to get there he got a little hungry and as you can guess the full loaf never made it home. As a teenager, Peter joined his father to work in the underground mines. That lasted only a day. Instead he took to the heights and mined the hills.
Peter moved to Toronto and went to college and worked in the city at Harry Houser for 33 years.
During those years, he enjoyed many hobbies with friends such as golf games and the monthly poker group.
Family was important to Peter. He volunteered with Scott’s hockey teams and Kelly’s baton competitions. He was always supportive of our endeavours.
Upon retirement he enjoyed the slower pace of Cottage life in Muskoka. Fishing was his passion and we all enjoyed the bass breakfasts as a result.
Family vacations were enjoyed to various islands over the years. He loved Jamaica and calypso music. Peter and Joan also enjoyed many cruises with family friends over the years.
He was proud of his grandchildren and loved to talk about their accomplishments: Matthew’s Kumon accomplishments and bowling, Sarah’s soccer and his enjoyment of her visits at the retirement home, Lindsay’s gymnastics and Matthew’s hockey.
Peter lived a full life and he will always be remembered for his strength and determination when life became difficult.
He will be sadly missed, by his family, and the many friends he made through his journey.
A celebration of life will be held at Thornton Cemetery Cremation and Funeral Centre 1200 Thornton Rd North Oshawa on Thursday, July 25th 2019 from 11-2pm. If you wish memorial donations may be made to the March of Dimes or a charity of your choice.

As an employee of Harries Houser in the 1970’s, I worked beside Val Kronyk who was a long time secretary to Peter. As a young inexperienced country girl, Mr. Smuk and Val made me feel a part of the team. I admired his natural friendliness, fairness and always a gentleman. The law firm was fortunate to have him in their employ. My sincere condolences to his family.

Heartfelt sympathy to all in our family as we remember a wonderful, kind gentleman who added a ray of brightness, spark, energy and life to all. It was an honour to have known him as he supported people with his frankness, humour and love. My mom and dad thought the world of him. And I will never forget his laughter and fun at a family functions! xo Memories are treasured. xo Holly
