In memory of

(Paul) Douglas Wickland

November 20, 1942 -  December 26, 2020

Passed away peacefully and with family at the Rekai Wellesley Central Place on Boxing Day, following a long battle with Primary Progressive Aphasia. Doug was the beloved husband of Linda, father of David (Emily), Janet (Christian), cherished grandfather of Tessa and Tristan, and older brother of Ingrid and Jim. He was deeply loved and will be missed by his family and friends.

Doug was born in Truro, Nova Scotia and raised in East Lansing, Michigan and later Guelph, Ontario. After graduating from McMaster University and Althouse College at UWO, Doug volunteered with CUSO teaching overseas in Kabala, Sierra Leone from 1967-1969. Upon repatriating, he worked as a teacher for the TDSB where he spent the majority of his career teaching adults at CALC. Doug was a passionate educator and life-long learner who had the privilege of helping many adults return to complete their high school diplomas.

In retirement, Doug was an active advocate of environmental stewardship and devoted considerable time to researching the family’s genealogy and writing a book on his various life experiences. As well, Doug was an avid runner, racket sports player, and enjoyed volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.

Our thanks and admiration to the staff who cared for him throughout his stay at Rekai. A celebration of life will be held with family and friends when it is safe. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choosing.

Doug and his family have been wonderful neighbours for years. I remember so well seeing Doug playing tennis on the Leaside and North York courts. He was a kind and thoughtful soul, and he will be missed. All our sympathies to Linda and the family.

I never had the privilege of meeting Doug, but I have the honour of calling his son Dave my brother in law. And in knowing Dave, I can say confidently that he was an amazing father. Rest In Peace Doug.
