In memory of

Paul Chan

December 23, 1936 -  March 26, 2019

Paul Yu Kee Chan was a good father to his kids, a talented craftsman, and he had a contagious love for the outdoors. He was married twice and cared much for each family. He passed away in the early hours of Tuesday March 26, 2019 at Mackenzie Health hospital in Richmond Hill.

Paul is survived by his two ex-wives Lichu (Lee) Chan and Andrea Wong; his daughter Leah Chan-Ribeiro and son Kendall Chan; his step son Jeff and step daughter Tania; his brothers Andrew, John and Joseph; and sisters Margret, Alice and Connie, and his grandchildren Daphne Ribeiro, Lucas Joseph Chan and Henry Blake Chan.

Paul was born in Hong Kong on Dec 23rd, 1936 to his parents Mr. and Mrs. You Cheung Chan. He lost his mother during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. After the war his father was again a school principal at a Catholic high school in Hong Kong. Paul's step-mother's name was Mei Yung Chiu and the family grew to seven children.

As a teenager Paul was already an avid outdoorsman and it was at this time he developed his unique personal hobby of crafting wooden warships. He was a sea scout in Hong Kong, a strong swimmer and a gymnast. Paul later went to Australia to study Electrical Engineering. At his part-time jobs in Australia he met many kind people. He loved the outdoors experiences in Australia especially the fishing trips and sleeping outdoors in places like Tasmania. The general passion for the outdoors was something he carried through his whole life.

Paul and Lee immigrated to Canada in 1967 settling in Toronto and he worked for Ontario Hydro. Together they welcomed the arrival of daughter Leah in 1972 and shortly after Kendall. Paul worked for Hydro until he retired.

In his retirement he returned to his old self-taught craft of building wooden warships. He continued his general handy man skills whether it be finishing a basement or building a deck or doing a car repair. He was always looking for opportunities to gather friends and family to eat good food. He enjoyed his friends at the bridge club, the Taichi club, and the model shipbuilding group. He always tried his best to be a helpful contributor to those around him.
