With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Nicholas Davos, who died peacefully at the age of 89 on September 3, 2025, at Toronto General Hospital.
Born in Greece, Nick lived through the hardships of World War II and the Greek Civil War. With limited opportunities in post-war Europe, he immigrated to Canada in the late 1950s in search of a better future. It was in Toronto that he met his beloved wife Voula and was married for 68 years. Like many immigrants of his generation, Nick’s education was interrupted, and he began his new life humbly washing dishes in restaurants. Through hard work and determination, he eventually rose to become an executive chef, notably working with The Four Seasons hotel chain.
After marrying Voula, the couple settled in North Toronto, where they raised three children: Peter, Florence, and Diane. Nick was a gentle and kind-hearted man, always ready to lend a helping hand. He was instrumental in helping many relatives immigrate from Greece, offering them shelter in his own home as they found their footing and built new lives in Canada.
In 1996, Nick was diagnosed with liver failure caused by a viral disease for which there was no cure. At the time, patients with this disease were not eligible for transplants, as the virus was thought to compromise any new organ. Facing grim prospects, Nick was invited by Toronto General Hospital to participate in a clinical trial for a new antiviral treatment. With courage and hope, he volunteered—knowing there were no guarantees. The treatment proved successful, and thanks to Nick and other brave participants, medical protocols were changed. Today, this disease is no longer a barrier to receiving a liver transplant.
At the time of his diagnosis, Nick had one grandchild. By the time of his passing, he was a proud grandfather to five: Jessica, Nicole, Matthew, Michael, and Nicholas.
In addition to his children and grandchildren Nick is survived by his wife Voula, sons-in-law Raymond, Peter and daughter in-law Patricia.
The family is forever grateful to the donor family and dedicated staff at Toronto General Hospital for both the life-saving care Nick received nearly three decades ago and the compassionate end-of-life care he received in his final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ajmera Transplant Centre at the University Health Network (UHN) in memory of Nicholas Davos.
