On Thursday, July 17th 2025, Nang Vien passed away in Toronto at the age of 91.
He will be missed dearly by his wife of 62 years, Tien Van Tran; his children: Mandy Vien, Giai Vien and wife Joanne Seto, Thieu (Danny) Vien, and Thuy Cynthia Vien and husband Sam Huang; his four grandchildren: Orson Fung, Athena Fung, Oscar Vien, and Nicole Vien; and his many family members and loved ones.
Nang was born on October 8th, 1933 in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam. He was a talented blacksmith and ran a successful business with his fifth brother, Thong Vien. He did not need instructions to know how something worked, or how to fix it if it was broken; he could understand simply by looking at a diagram or by tinkering with the item itself. Even in his later years, he would take the initiative to fix things around the house. He always had a keen eye for detailed work and would put in the effort to redo a project as many times as necessary, just to have it done right.
He immigrated to Canada alongside his family in 1979. He arrived at Toronto Pearson Airport with only 20USD in his pocket. He had no understanding of the English language, but he knew he still had to provide for the six others with him: his wife, his four children, and his sister. He would wake at 4am in the morning for a two hour commute to his job at a furniture store. His hard work and dedication allowed him to purchase a home for his family just five years later.
The last company he worked for was Steelcase. He would supervise machinery operations to ensure that everything was working smoothly. If something went wrong, they knew that they could depend on him to know how to fix it. If there was a part that was needed for repair, rather than ordering it, he would make it from scratch so that production would not be delayed.
Nang was known for his good natured personality. He was a quiet and patient person, and he never fought with anyone. He enjoyed tending to the garden in his backyard, and often grew melons that would be eaten by the whole family. He liked to go on walks and could often be spotted taking his usual route around the neighbourhood park.
Nang had endured a short stay at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital last year and received care from Ontario Health atHome Services with Paramed. We would like to thank all his health care professionals and caregivers, and also express our appreciation for care and support from his many brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws.
We will forever cherish the precious time and memories we were able to have with him.
