In memory of

Mimi Wong

May 30, 1972 -  February 8, 2024

With profound sadness yet celebrating her remarkable life, we share the news of Mimi Wong's passing in the hospital, surrounded by her loved ones, after a valiant battle with cancer and its complications.

Mimi leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with her parents, Mr. Yin-Leung Wong and Mrs. Cecilia Wong, her sister, Joanne Wong, her life partner, Greg Birtch, and a large close-knit extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Born in Hong Kong and raised in Toronto, Mimi's growth journey began at the University of Toronto, leading to a fulfilling career at Tangerine (ING Direct), where she forged lifelong friendships and where she also met Greg. It was there, amidst professional triumphs and personal milestones, her path continued to ascend as she excelled in executive roles within the Government of Ontario, leaving an indelible mark on all her endeavours.

Mimi's presence was a beacon of warmth, generosity, and a quick-witted sense of humour, bringing joy and laughter to everyone fortunate enough to cross her path. Her spirit, characterized by an immense capacity for love and kindness, touched many lives.

In addition to the private family memorial, there will be a Celebration of Life to honour Mimi's memory, inviting her wide circle of friends to share their stories and memories.

In lieu of flowers, we welcome donations to the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation to a fund in Mimi’s name, a tribute to her compassionate spirit, would be appreciated. Please follow this link to Mimi's Memorial Fund: https://supportthepmcf.ca/ui/MimiWong/donations/start

In my first year working at ING Direct Canada (Tangerine), I was a member of the Operations team. For a long time, I admired Mimi from a distance. Her confidence was not arrogant and she was all business! One day I took a chance to say hello in the elevator. And she replied with a kind hello and gentle smile. She was instrumental in forging my career at the organization and was perhaps my biggest secret cheerleader. We would eventually have pho lunches and dinners and just talk. She was an amazing, honest, sounding board. We continued pur relationship once we both moved on and would have coffee catch ups and continued career advice. Per our usual text conversations is when she told me about her health challenges in 2023. I left her a very language filled response to which she replied that it was OK...she'd be ok...and not to worry.

Last week I did a check-in, because I came to know and respect her privacy over the years; that's who she was, private. I'm so grateful she let me into her sacred circle. My last text to her, I sent her a photo of me since being able to visit her was near impossible. She thanked me for it and I will re-read her "I love you" response forever.
She was tough and sweet. The perfect blend. I will miss her greatly.

To her parents and sister, and Greg, she spoke of you all so fondly. She was so happy because of you. Thank you.

Until, M...

From Gateway Chinese school in, to reuniting later in high school in and then post-uni among common friends…consider these ‘lucky’ coincidences for me and the time with Mimi. You will always be in my thoughts.

Dear Greg, Joanne and family,

This is beyond difficult. My heart goes out to all of you as the family and I send our heartfelt sympathy to during this difficult time.

The obituary highlighted Mimi's remarkable life. She was one of my first managers who later became both a friend and mentor. I remember our times at ING Direct very well and there are so many memories that I will be grateful for. Mimi was always one to provide me with empathetic and frank advice. She always lead by example and displayed the characteristics of a true leader.

Over the years life continues to progress and even though we took different paths, we always took time to get together and catch up. Her generosity and graciousness with me and my family will never be forgotten.

Please know that we are thinking of you and hoping for healing wherever it is possible. You are not alone, once again I wanted to extend our condolences.

With deepest sympathy,

Douglas Wong and Family
