Passed away peacefully at the Peter K Kwok Hospice at Yee Hong Centre on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. Predeceased by his spouse Agnes Kaneko (nee Uyede) in 1989. ‘Papa’ will be greatly missed by his children Dave (Sue) Kaneko, Blaine (Doreen) Kaneko, Leslie Nakawatase and his grandchildren Caitlin, Brendan, Abby, and Nathan.
Mickey was born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1931 to Toye Kaneko. And although he lived in a fairly impoverished part of town he would proudly take his family to show it off whenever he would visit Vancouver. As the 2nd World War approached, ‘Sugar Boy’ was relocated to an internment camp in the interior of B.C., known as Tashme. Throughout his internment, Mickey maintained his now familiar optimism of “I had a lot of fun times”. Following the end of the war he moved to Ontario worked as a ‘houseboy’ for a wealthy tobacco owner then onto Danforth dry cleaners and then finally as a conductor for Canadian National Railway for 41 years. Along the way he proudly joined the Canadian Military’s Governor Generals Horse Guards.
From the mid 50s he became a member of the Japanese-Centennial United Church on Dovercourt Ave., where he met and made friendships and relations that would last his lifetime. Accordingly, he was the kind of person who left a long-lasting impact on those who knew him.
There will be a visitation and refreshments at Pine Hills Cemetery and Funeral Centre at 625 Birchmount Road, Scarborough, Ontario on Sunday October 27 from 10:00 A.M - 12:00 P.M.
