In memory of

Michael Peter John Alford

March 23, 1927 -  May 13, 2019

We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, son, brother and uncle at the age of 92 on May 13, 2019 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, with his wife and daughter by his side. Lovingly remembered by his wife Thelma, daughters Nancy and Christina, nieces and nephews Cindy, Jenny, John (Tiki), Peter (Bay) and James, and all of his family and friends. Peter was predeceased by his wife Jennie and siblings Vanna, Alison and Martin.

Born in London, England, Peter was the youngest child of John and Gabriella Alford. Peter and family travelled throughout Europe and lived in England, Italy and Germany before emigrating to Canada in 1937 when John began his tenure as the founding chair of the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Toronto.

Peter studied radio and television arts at Ryerson and worked as an editor, director and producer with TVO until his retirement in 1981. Peter travelled extensively, visiting many corners of the world, and was passionate about politics, cinema, public broadcasting, classical music and cultivating his extraordinary tropical greenhouse and garden. Peter's volunteer work with the United Nations and the Council of Canadians reflected a lifelong concern for social justice that developed during the time the family spent in Nazi Germany from 1936-1937. Peter was loved by all who knew him and his mischievous spirit, sharp wit and tremendous intellect will be dearly missed.

A celebration of life will take place at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto from 12:00 - 15:30 on Thursday May 30, 2019.

Uncle Peter,

I always looked forward to discussing and debating current events with you whenever there was a family event. I will miss these moments and your sharp sense of humour.
