In memory of

Mei Wah Monica Fong

June 14, 1951 -  October 12, 2020

Mei Wah Fong (方 美 華) passed away October 12, 2020 from lung cancer at the age of 69 with her youngest daughter Beeky by her side. She was born in Toishan, China on June 14, 1951 and was the second eldest daughter in her family. After her father passed away, Mei Wah and her brother Sek Cheung took on many responsibilities as the eldest siblings of the family living in Hong Kong. She collected the rent at an early age which earned her the name “Big Mouth Wah” (大 口 華).

After high school she taught kindergarten children before emigrating to Canada where she met the love of her life, Ping-Chiu Fong (方 炳 超) and they have been happily married for 44 years. The early years were challenging but with the help and support of their family they raised 3 daughters and ran a very successful restaurant. Mei Wah’s talkative and friendly personality contributed to the success of Fong’s restaurant. She was proud of her 3 daughters all of whom graduated from university due to the importance she always placed on education. She was also proud to be a popo (婆 婆) to 4 grandchildren and was excited for the one on the way. Mei Wah was a loyal and beloved wife, mother, popo, daughter, sister, aunt and friend to many. We will miss her dearly.

Our gratitude goes out to the staff of Princess Margaret Hospital who treated Mei Wah with dignity, compassion and kindness and gave us the gift of more time with her. If you would like to make a donation in her memory please contact:

I'll always remember the summers we spent in Alliston at the restaurant. It was my first time seeing all the hard work and dedication that goes into running a family run business in the kitchen and at the front. Your mom had such a skill for welcoming people and making them instantly feel at home. Customers became family. When they finally retired, I remember how she would tell me her proudest accomplishment was her three girls and all her grandbabies. We're all going to miss you very much. I hope you've finally found some peace as you make your last journey across. I send my condolences and love to my cousins and my uncle.
