Surrounded by her family, May Yuk Luk Leung, 79, passed away on September 30, 2023, peacefully in her sleep after a year-long battle with cancer.
May is survived by her husband Jackson Che Cheong Luk, son Alan Luk and his wife Benita Fong, daughter Mandy Luk, and granddaughter Jolie Luk.
May was born in Hong Kong on March 3, 1944. She was a joyful spirited soul with so many interests and passions. She was popular in her high-school years, playing basketball and badminton. As an avid swimmer, it was natural for her to become a member of the Hong Kong Life Guards Club. She also travelled to many parts of the world with her husband and family - Singapore, Japan, the Philippines, China, Australia and Europe.
After immigrating to Canada in 1993, and retiring in her 40s, May continued to enjoy life with friends through dancing, singing and playing mahjong. She was a foodie. Not only did she love to have gourmet meals at restaurants, but she was also a great home chef, and liked to host big parties with her family and friends.
May had made an impact on many lives. She had a fulfilling teaching career in Hong Kong as an elementary school teacher in English, Chinese, and Sports. She even acquired a certificate in teaching Mandarin. She also never stopped learning. One of her most memorable experiences was to attend French classes each day in Montreal when she first came to Canada. Moreover, she was committed to contributing to the community. In the past two decades, she devoted herself wholeheartedly to the work and activities of Hong Kei Fitness and Dance Club. Because of that commitment, she was awarded the Ontario Government's 5-Year and 10-Year Volunteer Service Awards respectively in 2013 and 2018.
May was the rock to her family. As the second child and the eldest daughter among 6 children, she took on the role of taking care of her 4 younger siblings with love and kindness in her younger years. She was a devoted wife who held her husband's hands through all the ups and downs in their 54 years of marriage. When she became a mother, she only wanted the best for her children. Her only granddaughter was her sweetheart. She will be forever missed. Until we meet again.
"I have no regrets as I had spent almost half of my life just having fun."
