In Loving Memory of Mary Hanza

With faith in her heart and surrounded by love, Mary Hanza passed away peacefully on Monday, October 6th 2025. A devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, Mary lived a life rooted in grace, faith, and compassion.

Born in Cairo, Egypt, the youngest of 5 children, she spoke often of her childhood in a busy multicultural city and attending the American College for Girls where she gained an education in English, French and Arabic. As a young adult, she spent time in Greece where she met her future husband, Nick Lianos. They came to Toronto Canada to marry and start a family. Mary was proud to have worked for the Ministry of Health and to have been appointed a manager in recognition of her excellent people skills.

Mary started a new chapter of her life with Bill Hanza in the 1980s and formed strong connections with neighbours on Pickett Crescent, in Richmond Hill, who have stayed lifelong friends. She was loved for her exuberant energy, and her joyful gatherings hosted for family and friends.

Mary’s journey was one marked by strength, resilience, and deep love for her family and her Greek Orthodox faith. She was a woman of remarkable spirit and unwavering determination—warm, outgoing, and full of life. Her laughter, energy, and courage inspired all who had the blessing of knowing her.

Mary will be dearly missed by her beloved sons, Dean (Margery) Lianos and Alex (Sandra) Lianos, who will forever cherish her unconditional love and the many lessons she shared through both her words and her example. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Isabella, Sophia, and Aydenne, who brought endless joy and light to her life.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved her—in her family’s laughter, in their traditions, and in the faith she so deeply embodied.

May her soul rest in eternal peace and her memory be everlasting.

Mary, you were like an aunt to me. You taught me so much when I was a child, from playing piano to helping me feel comfortable in the water so that I could learn to swim. We shared so many wonderful memories that I’ll always cherish.
You were so heartbroken when Bill passed away, and I’m comforted knowing you’ll now be reunited with him. You’ll always hold a special place in my heart.
