In memory of

Marijan (Mike) Krajan

November 1, 1926 -  September 20, 2022

We are sad to announce the passing of Mike (Marijan) Krajan, devoted husband and one true love of Ann (nee Anka Mrkusic), beloved father of Myrna (Gord Forsythe) and Sandra (Dave Paynter), cherished grandfather of Kyle (Samantha), Zach, Devon, and Aaron. He is predeceased by his sister, Myrna Sibilin.

Dad was born in Zagreb, Croatia, and it was love at first sight when he met Mom. They eloped in 1949 and left their homeland in 1951 to start a new adventure in Canada. Dad had studied architectural drafting in Zagreb, but worked many jobs to make ends meet when they arrived in Toronto, as did Mom, until he got his first job as an architectural draftsman. He built a career through the years working for a number of Toronto architects, his longest experience being with noted firm Mathers & Haldenby. He designed and built our family home in Don Mills, where they have lived since 1961, and built two cottages with his own hands, and with Mom’s help, for his daughters. Dad loved to build and fix things.

While he spent his last years before retirement with the Ministry of Government Services, managing large construction projects for the Province of Ontario, Dad continued drafting on the side for known Toronto architects.

Dad was a devoted father and grandfather, and exceptionally proud that his daughters and his four grandsons graduated with university degrees or have degrees underway. Bumpa’s grandsons were his pride and joy.

Dad lived a very active life, enjoyed rowing his skiff on Georgian Bay, and had a passion for skiing, which he passed on to his daughters by getting them on skis at a very young age. Even up to his late 80s he was walking several kilometres a day. He loved his dogs, and had a soft heart for all animals. He will also be remembered for his quick wit and great sense of humour, and his willingness to help others. He loved being at the cottage, and made it a special gathering place for family — he was happiest when surrounded by his loving wife, daughters, sons-in-law, and especially his grandsons.

His presence in our lives will be deeply missed.

A funeral service for Dad will be held at St. Gabriel’s Parish in North York on Wednesday, Sept. 28th at 11am, followed by a private interment for family only. There will be a short visitation at the church prior to the service.

Donations in Dad’s name could be made to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto.

Myrna and family, I am so sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. I remember visiting Myrna’s home during our university days. Mike was always inquiring about our university activities and was truly interested in everything his daughters did. He was a most supportive and involved father. He will be truly missed. 💕

Zach and the entire family,

We are so sorry for your loss. Although we don’t have any direct memories with your grandfather, we are grateful to have spent time at your wonderful family cottage this summer and feel closer to him knowing that he and his wife built it themselves and enjoyed it for so many years. From reading the obituary, it is clear that he was a man of many talents and touched the lives of many people. We wish you strength during this difficult time.
