In memory of

Maria "Lourdes" Mak

April 22, 1946 -  February 4, 2024

Maria Mak, 77, died in her sleep on February 4, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Nicknamed “Lourdes” by her family and childhood friends, Maria was born on April 22, 1946 in Tacloban City, Philippines, to parents Eng Tee Ngo and Bun Chiao Chu. She majored in Accounting at Divine Word University (St. Paul's College). In 1974, she married Park Tong Mak, who would be her partner in life for the next 44 years, until his death in 2018. They lived in Montreal, Canada, where Maria worked in the accounts administration department of the city’s clothing export sector.

She is survived by daughter Monica and grand-daughters Siobhan and Chelsea (Toronto). She was pre-deceased by sister Billie and brother Benito. She is dearly missed by siblings Alberta, Lily, and Tony (Canada); Concepcion, Lino, and Sixto (Philippines); and Lolita (Taiwan).

When she retired, Maria developed a passion for tai chi exercise, Chinese beadwork, and gardening. During spring and summer, neighbours and regular passers-by would often see her spending hours lovingly tending her garden. Maria was a brave and independent woman; she was known for being stoic, pragmatic, and calm, in even the most physically and emotionally challenging situations.

Thank you to the many doctors who gave her comfort, advice, and hope in her final months, including Dr. Urszula Zurawska-Fortin & Dr. Michael Ko (St. Joseph Health Centre), Dr. Geoffrey Liu (Princess Margaret), Dr. Cheryl Ho (Vancouver Cancer Centre), and especially her son-in-law Dr. Stephen Lee (St. Joseph Health Centre).

She will live in our hearts forever.

I am all tears and deeply depressed upon hearing the sad news,it was so sudden and unbelievable. T'was only 2years ago we had our family reunion in tacloban, we had so much fun ,dancing, singing and merry making. You were in good spirits and taught us a lot of yoga. We stayed at the same room and shared a lot of photos and video clips from your iPad. I am missing u already and will miss u forever. So sorry I can't come to see u for the last moment, very heartbroken😭😭😭. You are always in my heart. May the Lord be with you..Rest in peace~

We were so privileged having Maria in our exercise group. She often acted as a big sister to us all. Whenever there was a new member to our group, she would offer her helping hands.

I have known Maria for almost ten years at YMCA where I was teaching Taichi classes. Her enthusiasm and cheerful voices still vibrated in my ears. She often helped me discuss better arrangements for my tenure at Y. I must say it's because of her, my teaching at Y was improved.

Maria was a skillful cake baker. Not only she would bake for us every Christmas, whenever we needed volunteers at our Buddhist temple, she accompanied me to do the volunteering work there.

I personally feel we are like sisters and treasured our relationship together. Before she left us last year, we talked for a long time before departing. Just last Christmas, I received her best wishes, now I feel it's our solemn affinity.

Maria, you are forever in my memory.

I knew Maria from our YMCA class with Wendy Li. I remember Maria's warm calm beauty, the warmth of her smile, the generous, warmhearted way she made us all feel welcome and included in the group.

You only have to see a picture of Maria to once again feel her beauty, inside and out.

I am sad to hear of Maria's passing. I have happy memories of years of learning Tai chi at the YMCA with Maria in Wendy's class. I was happy for Maria that she did so much travelling with her daughter. I occasionally ran into her downtown shopping. And we followed our exercise class on zoom.

Maria was a kind and cheerful friend - I am sorry to hear of her passing and may she rest in peace. My condolences to the family.
