It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Margherita De Filippis at the age of 87. Margherita was born in Roccamandolfi, Molise, Italy on March 4, 1934. She immigrated to Canada in 1957 with her husband, Domenico, and infant son, Giuseppe (Joseph). Two more sons, Lorenzo and Liberato, were born in Toronto.

Margherita worked most of her life as a ward clerk at Providence Centre. She and Domenico maintained a substantial vegetable garden and the many tomato plants were used to produce jars of sauce for pasta and pizza. She loved to cook. Her children and their friends enjoyed many wonderful meals at her home, including a large group that came together each Christmas Eve.

Margherita often said that among her happiest years were those spent babysitting her grandchildren – Sarah, Julia and Rebecca – the daughters of Linda and Joseph. Recently, she was delighted to welcome a great grandchild, the “healthy and good looking” Harry Hunter, son to Julia De Filippis and Kevin Hunter.

Margherita left this world, confident in the afterlife, where she will be re-united with her son, Lorenzo, and other loved ones who predeceased her.

We will miss her physical presence but our memories of her are with us always.
