Mabel was born in London, Ontario on April 8, 1964. From a very early age, it was clear that Mabel had a strong drive to work hard and do everything to the best of her abilities. Mabel graduated from Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute in Scarborough, and went on to receive her BA in Business Administration from Ryerson University in 1988. Upon graduation, Mabel went to work for IBM Canada, spending most of her career in Sales Management and Account Management in the Retail and Software sectors.
It was at IBM that she met her husband Stewart Thompson. Mabel and Stewart married in 1995 and moved to Unionville/Markham in 1997 where they have raised two beautiful children, Ethan 12 and Megan 9.
Her greatest joy in work and in life was being a mentor to colleagues, staff, family, friends, acquaintances and especially children. Mabel, with her passion and enthusiasm had an innate ability to inspire others to be their best, and often achieve far beyond what they imagined. Mabel was particularly interested in instilling children with a sense of the possible. She enjoyed being a supportive bench manager for Ethan’s hockey teams in Unionville as well as being an active manager for the 2003 Unionville Milliken Soccer Club girls’ teams. Daily, Mabel applied this same devotion to raising her own children of whom she was most proud.
She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, and the disease only served to make Mabel more passionate about everything she did in life. This made her a true inspiration to all those who knew her. Mabel will be dearly missed by her family and the many people she has touched with her zeal, irrepressible enthusiasm and heartfelt commitment to others.
Mabel was grateful for the high level of care she received from the wonderful physicians at Princess Margaret, Sunnybrook and Markham Stouffville Hospital. She wished to particularly thank Dr. Henry Solow, Dr. Patrick Whelan, the staff at Markham Stouffville Hospital in the Medical Day Unit and in 1 East Palliative Care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her honor to the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation or to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Memorial Donations to Mabel's charities may be made on the Donations Page.
