Loucas passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family at the age of 87. He ended his thirteen-month battle with cancer.
He was born in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece to Christos and Fotini Christidis who were both refuges from Asia Minor. Loucas was a stonemason in Thessaloniki working in marble, restoring the Byzantine churches of the city.
In the summer of 1961, he met a Greek Canadian tourist from Toronto. They quickly fell in love (under the supervision of her chaperone Anastasia) and were married one month later. Loucas arrived in Toronto on a cold snowy January day in 1962. Ten months later Niki and Loucas welcomed their first child Zoe, also on a very cold and snowy day. Two and a half years later their son Christos arrived. Loucas started in the real estate business to support his new family. After four years of marriage, they bought their first car, a bungalow on Pape Avenue, and their first boat.
Loucas was a great lover of the outdoors. He embraced what the Provincial Parks of Ontario had to offer and raised his children in nature — cottaging, camping and fishing. Loucas also instilled the love of his native city Thessaloniki, and of his country into his children which they both embraced and have shared with their children.
Loucas was a storyteller. Often, the stories were about the big one that got a way or the numerous ones he battled, caught and ate. Sometimes they were about the adventures he had with one of his brothers, or with his many friends. Whatever the subject matter, once a story started, there was no quick escape.
Loucas leaves behind his super-cook of a spouse Niki who lovingly fed him gourmet meals until he could no longer take a bite. He also leaves behind his daughter Zoe, his son-in-law Endel, his daughter-in-law Georgia and his grandchildren, Alexia, Loucas and Aleksander.
We are very saddened by his loss, but we know he has been reunited with his son Chris and his granddaughter Andrea along with other beloved family members.
May his memory be eternal.
