In memory of

Leon Field

August 24, 1934 -  January 11, 2023

We are so deeply saddened to announce that Leon Joseph Field passed away on January 11th, 2023, surrounded by his son Greg and spouse Katina.

An only child, Leon was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, on August 24th, 1934 To Carl and Lily Field. They were a devoted family, always working hard and enjoying the simple things in life. Then the war came, throwing them into a conflict that pushed them, and so many others to the limit.

In 1948, Leon and his parents immigrated to Canada, eventually settling into Toronto. As a teenager, Leon attended Central Tech High School and enjoyed Fine Arts, as well as playing the violin. After graduating, Leon decided to enrol in the Marvel Hairdressing Academy. It was here that he realized he had a real talent for a career in hair. It wasn’t long before he opened his own salon in Toronto- a career that lasted his entire lifetime.

A dashing, handsome and social guy—with the gift of the gab, led Leon to many new friendships along the way, as well as new romances.

While on a trip to London, England, he met his true love Margaret, an Austrian. They had two children, Gregory and Nicole—unfortunately the marriage didn’t last, and Leon was left with the responsibility of raising two-year old Greg by himself, while Nicole moved back to Austria with her mother. Through the years, Leon proved to be a loving and devoted father to Greg, while managing his own business.

Loved by so many for his great smile, charm, and sense of humor, Leon had close friends as well as many acquaintances. Leon always loved dogs, and they were always present throughout the years at home.

After retiring from a successful career in hairdressing, Leon continued cutting hair well into his eighties.

Leon was passionate about sports; he was known to regularly get up in the wee hours of the morning to watch his favorite tennis match, or Formula 1 race. One of his favorite things was when he and Greg would make dinner and watch Hockey Night in Canada, cheering on their favourite teams.

Leon also loved music- especially classical and jazz.

Leon found happiness spending time with friends and family—whether it was on the golf course or having a barbeque with a bottle of wine, Leon was always up to having a good time.

Leon was truly blessed by his friends and family. Peter Landsman who was his longest and closest friend, along with Rochelle, Sarah, Wendy and Simon. Also Leon's cousin Tony Kaye and daughter Melanie. Leon’s dear friend Nina who cared for him and was his biggest advocate. Leon’s caregiver Fan- who tirelessly supported and cared for him at Baycrest. A special thanks goes out to the staff at Baycrest.

Leon’s daughter Nicole- though she was not brought up by her father, always held a special place in his heart. Leon was also Grandfather to Nicole's daughters Uma and Jua, and Great-Grandfather to Uma’s son Kazeem

Finally Leon's son Greg- who will miss his father so much… and will never forget the love his dad has given him through his life. The two shared so many cherished times together.

Leon will be truly missed. May he always be in our hearts, and have a special place in heaven.

There will be a graveside service, followed by a light lunch at York Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Baycrest.

I thank God for bringing Leon and I to get to know each other. We had a special relationship that went beyond words. The look that he gave me, and how he squeezed my hand spoke louder than words. I looked forward when he came and visited me here at Christie Gardens, had lunch and spent some time together. People here got to know him and liked him. When they heard he was ill, the two chaplains here plus friends reassured me of their prayers for him. Leon is now free from his illness. I will miss him. May our Lord bless his soul and give him peace. Love you Leon. Nina
