It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of our sweet wonderful father, Leo Malcom Barkhouse. He peacefully slipped away with family by his side at Woodhaven long-term home on Oct 23, 2024 in his 95th year. He is predeceased by the love of his life Ann in 2021. He had missed her greatly every day since. They were married on November 3,1951 and were married for 70 happy years. We do take comfort in knowing he is now reunited with her.
Left to miss him dearly are his daughters, Robin (Gavin), Leanne (Brad) and Rhonda (Gary). Cherishing his memory and guidance are his grandchildren, Erin, Jessica, Owen, Joel, Christopher, Brandon, Emily and Evan. Leo also leaves behind a legacy of great-grandchildren Andie, Kamryn, Ryann,Wesley, Leo, Everliegh, Leo, Madeline and Genevieve. Yes, he has two Leos in his honour.
Leo was born on August 15, 1930 in Dartmouth Nova Scotia to Percy and Genora (Clatenberg) Barkhouse. He was the youngest of four boys, Herbert,Clarence and Stanley are brothers he looked up to with admiration. Despite hard times as a young boy he rose above this and with the promise of work he moved to Ontario as a young man. He secured a job with Comstock going into Toronto homes and doing hydro conversions from 20 cycle to 60 cycle. While with this company he earned many accolades, homeowners would write in complimenting how polite and efficient he was. He embraced learning everything he could, that lead to a successful lengthy career in his own appliance repair business. He was also a great provider purchasing a home in Scarborough where he and Ann raised their three daughters. They lived in this home for over 65 years before moving to Woodhaven long-term care home in Markham. He was adored by the nurses, psw's and staff throughout the home due to his gentle way and playful nature.
In his retirement years he enjoyed travelling to other countries and going on cruises with friends. Also, as a long standing member of St. Andrews church he took great pride providing items for many church bazaars. He spent long hours creating woodworking pieces with passion and precision. This skill he proudly passed along to his grandson Christopher. He also enjoyed making new friends while repairing lamps for Royal Lighting. As well, one of his other highlights was working for the Toronto Blue Jays for ten years. This included the two exciting years they won the world series.
Leo was a great husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and a friend to many. He will be forever missed by all who knew him. He was a true “Mr Fix it” Well done, Dad.
