In memory of

Lakshmi Vaidyanathan

September 30, 1928 -  March 7, 2020

Lakshmi Vaidyanathan passed away in Toronto on March 7, 2020 after 92 years of a long, happy and adventure-filled life. Born in Tanjavur, India in 1928 as one among 11 siblings, she married P.R. Vaidyanathan in 1945 and made her home in Bombay, India for the next 38 years. There she watched India become free and raised four children: Rajagopal (d. 1993), Visalakshi, Mahadevan and Kunjal. Following the death of her husband, Lakshmi left India for Calgary, Canada in 1985 where she learned English by watching soaps, talking to friends and raising her grandchildren. Days of our Lives and General Hospital remain her favourite shows. She will be missed by her three children as well as her nine grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren all of whom enjoyed the company of their generous Patti with her sharp wit and ready smile.
Despite her humble origins, Lakshmi was a cosmopolitan woman who travelled easily between India, Canada and the US and enjoyed a vibrant social life with friends and her large family. She was equally at home guiding intricate Hindu rituals and making pizza and nachos with her grandchildren. She enjoyed the company of children, always ready to hold them, share stories and bring smiles to their faces. Her family is grateful to have had her guidance, support and company for these long years and will miss her dearly.

As a little kid, I remember going with the family to drop her at the airport. That image of her walking through the airport gate still is a memory that I hold close - it spoke of her spirit, her willpower, her confidence, her love for life and people.
Happy to have met her in India last year - nothing changed after all these decades. She was as cheerful, as loving, as affectionate and as wonderful as always.

Paati will live in our memories. Best thing to remember her for are: She was self reliant. She loved feeding guests. I always felt like home around her.

Condolences to her daughters and son; her grand kids and great grand kids.
