In memory of
Kwan Cheong Ng - 吳群昌先生千古
February 4, 1940 -
May 10, 2023
Kwan Cheong Ng was born in a small village in Hoi Ping, in the Guangdong province of China in 1940. At the tender age of 17 he boarded a steamboat to Canada with little more than his determination to start a new life and to help his family in China. In 1966, he returned to Hong Kong to marry Shui Wah and started a family in Canada shortly thereafter.
He was a humble, caring and devoted family man. Over the span of 20 years, he persevered through all the immigration laws and processes he did not understand to sponsor his father and mother in-law, his brother, sister-in-law and their five children, and finally his own parents, to come to Canada. He exemplified the plight of so many first-generation immigrants who achieve so much with so little and sacrificed so much for the betterment of family and future generations.
For years Kwan worked an exhausting schedule in a Chinese restaurant, but he always managed to maintain his sense of humour. He loved telling stories. Occasionally he would accidentally mash together English and Chinese words that would be a good laugh for the family. He was grateful for what he had and enjoyed the simple things in life: tinkering in the garage, creating ingenious ways to repair broken tools, growing enormous winter melons in his backyard, or cooking a delicious meal.
Kwan passed away peacefully on May 10, 2023 at the age of 83 after a lengthy battle with liver disease. He is survived by his brother, sister, wife, daughter, two sons, and three grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.
