There’s too many to choose from, but 1 & in no particular order…for our annual family road trips to Boston & NYC to visit family, I was always the only one who got carsick. Since we would leave usually at 2am, mom would always be up late at night peeling me a tofu tub rammed full of oranges for a vitamin c boost to help with the nausea. They never lasted longer than Ontario, but they always did the trick.
Thanks Dr. Mom! ❤️

For as long as I can remember, pau pau always had a smile on her face. From raising us since I was a baby, to picking up moy and I from elementary school, to cooking every dinner we’ve ever had. She never stopped giving her love. Anything she would do, she did it with love. She taught us to lead our lives with passion and to be our best selves. Even though she may not be here in the physical world with us now, I can always look up into the sky and feel the warmth of the sun as if her hand is touching my face. Her spirit radiates within our hearts and she will always be taking care of us from above.

She was the queen of the house. Took care of all the children and some not even her own. Being a role model to perfecting every dish she knows. She always gave her all. I'm sure she'll continue to watch over us. That's what she did best.

Over the past couple of years, I've been trying to reconnect more to my Chinese heritage and roots, just as Pau and Goong raised us to be so proud of. A couple of weeks ago, I stopped by Pau's house to visit her and Goong, and I wanted to show them I've been working on my Cantonese. I prefaced the conversation with, "Sik gong, sik teng... siu siu." They definitely couldn't understand me, so after some translation assistance from Vicki Yee Yee, they all laughed at my pathetic westernized accent and Goong begged me to go back to Chinese school — I promise I'll enroll myself back into Saturday School as soon as possible, Goong, don't worry. That was the last time I heard Pau laugh. She had the most contagious laugh and smile.

And you're always laughing and smiling at Pau's house. And eating... always, always eating. No doubt, after a couple of hours with Pau, you'll leave a few pounds heavier, but that just means she loves you. And when Pau loves, she loves with her whole heart....... and stomach.

When I moved away for school, I talked about Pau and her infamous dumplings to all of my friends. While visiting home, I told Pau my friends wanted to come to Scarborough to meet her and learn how to make authentic dumplings from the professional herself. Just watching her smile grow and her bashfully ask, "Really? They want to meet me?" will be one of her most adorable and humble moments that I'll remember.

Pau always told us she loved us. But you could really feel it in her hugs. Her hugs were the safest place in the world. She worked every day to make others happy. I can only hope she felt just as happy and loved that she made us.

Pau always talked about how excited she was to see her grandchildren grow up, get married and have kids of our own. It was her biggest dream. I wish you could be here to see it in person, Pau, but I know you'll be watching over us for the rest of forever. I love and miss you so much. But I'll see you again someday, and I can't wait for just one more hug — and this time, I won't let go.

Love,
Your Moy Moy

My parents have never seen Beijing and during a trip to visit me in Hong Kong and early in my relationship with Reid we took them to Beijing. It began quite charmingly as Reid, who isn't Chinese was our caucasian Mandarin speaking guide.

One of the highlights was the Great Wall of China. In the 90s it only accessible by car and we hired a taxi which took a few hours to arrive and when we did - she didn't care to walk and hike along the wall....she just touch it with her hand and said "all done"! I totally lost my mind at the Great Wall.

After deserting her at the walk for a hike and calming down - we took them to a small place near the Wall for dumplings and she absolutely wasn't having any because the dumplings didn't look clean or boiled. She refused to eat and stood outside until we slowly finished our bowls.

What does one eat in while in Beijing? Duck! Reid found a special duck place to eat and as we sat and finished ordering out food - she tells me she can't eat duck because it was too high in cholesterol.

We fought all the way during this trip. She hated northern food and constantly wanted to eat Cantonese food.

My mom never had the luxury of being able to express herself. She definitely knows what she likes and doesn't...in the end she told me it was her best trip ever....Aw the beauty of my mom.

During Reading week and Thanksgiving I went to her home in Scarborough to have nightly dinners and there was always a glass of orange juice ready for me when I arrived.

My parents always appreciated the kindness of your parents - dropping off some cookies or candy at the holidays, always inviting me to birthdays when we were little.

And being very kind when they were customers at the restaurant- especially once my mom’s health was failing.

I remember the mahjong games that would be going on downstairs at your house, and the HUGE vegetable garden
