In memory of

Kay Kazue Fujiwara

June 10, 1925 -  November 4, 2024

Kay Kazue Fujiwara (nee Toyota) passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024 at the age of 99, following a brief stay in Sunnybrook’s Palliative Care. Beloved wife of the late Osamu "Ozzie" Fujiwara, loving mother of David (Maria Rosa), Denise (John) and Midori (Hugh). Cherished grandmother to Osa (Arielle), Kiyo (Kelly), Sergio (Wilmarie), Carolina (Francesco), proud great-grandmother to Isabella & Gianluca. Predeceased by siblings: Tak, Tomi, Fudge, Kimi, Yuki, Frank, Phyllis & Doris Toyota, she will be sadly missed by her youngest brother Doug (Ruth), as well as the scores of nieces and nephews in her Toyota and Fujiwara families, and the many friends who have made up her life.
Kay was born in 1925 in Duncan, on Vancouver Island. A gifted dancer, she moved to Victoria on a dance scholarship when she was 15. This was cut short when she was sent with her family to the Japanese Canadian Internment Camp in Slocan, BC during WWII, where she met many lifelong friends. She eventually moved to Toronto, got a job on Spadina Avenue and married the love of her life, Ozzie. She pursued many interests avidly, teaching swimming and fitness, oil painting, photography and becoming a photographic stylist. After a hiatus of 25 years, she returned to her love of dance, performing in the feature film, The Offering by David Secter, and on stage. Her irrepressible energy led her to volunteer generously, most notably for the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre where she organized events, and designed and built sets for community productions. Kay will be remembered for her optimism and vibrant zest for life, and the gratitude she felt for her life.
A Celebration of Life will be held on December 6, 2024 at 3: pm at Mount Pleasant Cemetery Funeral Centre. Visitation at 2: pm
In lieu of flowers or koden, donations to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre are appreciated.
