Kam Yuen Chan
April 7, 1926 - April 17, 2015
William Kam Yuen Chan died peacefully at the age of 90 on Friday, April 17, 2015 at the Ajax-Pickering Hospital on Harwood Avenue in Ajax, after a short illness.
William Kam Yuen was born in Guangzhou, China on April 7, 1926, to Sau Kwong Chan and Fong Yuet Tao. He was the eldest of four children. While in China, he was a jeweler’s apprentice. In 1947, he married Yin Yan Chu and their first two children, Sue Rutland and Guy Chan, were born in China.
In 1954, he was forced to flee China and seek refuge in Canada due to persecution in Communist China, leaving behind his wife and two very young children. He arrived in Montreal, where he was a diligent employee of a Chinese Trading Company. He worked hard to save money to sponsor his wife and children. Seeking a better opportunity for employment, William Kam Yuen moved to Quebec City where he worked as a cook in various restaurants, at times holding down two or three jobs. In September of 1958, he finally reunited with his wife and two children, and soon after, he was blessed with the birth of his third child, Nancy.
William Kam Yuen lived in Quebec City for forty years gaining popularity among the small Chinese community in his neighbourhood. In those years, he continued to work diligently until he retired. He also took good care of his parents for a period of time. In 2004, just before his move to the Toronto area (Ajax) where his son, Guy and his daughter, Sue, live, he suffered an aortic aneurysm which had him hospitalized for close to six months. Despite all odds, he survived and bounced back to enjoy more than ten years of good life in Ajax, Ontario.
His infectious smile woould leave a lasting impression on all who met him. His appetite for good food allowed him to eat a variety of culinary delights, and his favourite activity was to explore every aisle in the grocery stores. He would study every item on the shelf with keen interest and he could literally spend hours pouring over the information on each item.
William Kam Yuen is survived by his wife, Yin Yan Chu, daughter, Sue ( husband, Roland) Rutland, son, Guy (wife, Betty) Chan, and daughter, Nancy Chan; 5 grandchildren, Jason (wife, Andreja) Rutland, Leigh (wife, Chloe) Rutland, Emily Rutland, Erin (husband, Costantine Fanaras) Chan, and Terry Chan; 2 great grandchildren, Luka and Dominik Rutland; two sisters, Shui Foon Tom and Sui Ying (husband, C J Kung) Kung , and many other loving nieces, nephews and relatives.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 24, 2015 at The Simple Alternatives Funeral home at 10:00 a.m. for general visitation, and service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Duffin Meadows Cemetery in Pickering.
