In memory of

冼金樹先生 Kam Shu Sin

November 13, 1948 -  September 19, 2020

Kam Shu SIN, of Richmond Hill, Ontario, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2020 at the age of 71 after a three-year battle with lung cancer, with his wife and daughters by his bedside. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sau Kam (also known as Stephanie); daughters Vicky and Vivian (Andrew); grandchildren Julia, John, and Abigail; brothers Peter (Brenda), Jack (Dilys), Eddie; sister Mary; and nephew Jackson (Emily). He was predeceased by his parents and elder sister Pui Chun.

Kam Shu (known as “Shu” to family and Kam or “Ah Sin” to everyone else) was born in Guangdong, China and moved to Hong Kong with his family as an infant. He began working at the age of 17 for the government of Hong Kong and eventually became an Acting Housing Manager within the Housing Authority. He was admired by his peers and superiors alike for his talents in problem solving, strategic thinking, administration, and human resources.

He took great pride in returning to school, as an adult with a young family, to pursue his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at the Chinese University of Hong Kong on a part-time basis. For six years, he would trek to campus after long days at work. His goal was to learn, prioritizing knowledge over grades, whether it be in core subjects or fun courses such as music. When he graduated with honours in 1989, his beaming smile could be seen far and wide.

At the centre of Kam Shu’s life, however, was his family. He saw taking care of family as his chief responsibility as a man. Every choice that he made was made with their welfare in mind. In 1990, Kam Shu decided to forgo a promising career in Hong Kong to immigrate to Toronto, Canada with his family. He viewed it as making an alternative investment -- the rewards would be realized in his young daughters’ futures and in keeping the family unit together.

Despite the early struggles of having to learn home and car maintenance as well as dealing with the harsh Canadian winters, Kam Shu carved out a successful life in Toronto. He became a Certified Financial Planner and had also taken steps toward becoming a Certified General Accountant. Just as he was about to receive a well-deserved promotion with the City of Toronto, he retired early to travel the world with his beloved wife. Together, they went to every continent except Antarctica. They reconnected with family and lifelong friends. In his later years, Kam Shu delighted in the company of his grandchildren.

Kam Shu will be greatly missed.

Although we know life is fragile, I still feel great sadness to let go such a nice, gentle and talented friend. He was willing to help solve problems and always had great opinions and views about things around the world and his surrounding. I hope he can go with no regret since he had such a wonderful life and family. Whenever I know we can no longer see his smile and hear his witty and humorous talks, it still makes my heart sink . I am sure he will rest in peace since all of us ; his family and friends are proud of him . It is my honor and pleasure to know such a great gentleman. He will be missed dearly.
