In memory of

Kathleen (Kae) Grogan Smith

December 3, 1921 -  August 3, 2022

With hearts full of love and sadness we announce the passing of mom, our beautiful “Irish Rose” as we held her hands on Wednesday August 3, 2022.

At 100 years and 8 months to the day, mom lead an extraordinary life.

A loving mother, to Liz and Kate and adoring grandmother to Max, Morgan, Aileigh, and Olivia and great grandmother to her 5 great grandchildren. Devoted step mother to Karen, Paul, Barry and Shirley of her late husband Lloyd Smith..

Born December 3, 1921 to Annie Deyell Lutton (Wingham) and John Lutton (Belfast) , mom grew up in Toronto with her two sisters , know as the “Irish Lutton girls” , Merry and Norine (deceased).

She attended Swansea public school and graduated from Runnymede Collegiate.

From childhood summers on the family farm in Wingham, to sailing trips on the Saguenay River, camping in Algonquin Park and tennis at the Boulevard Club as a young woman with her girlfriends, mom loved being outdoors, on and off the water.

During WW11 mom knit socks for our Canadian troops as she rode the streetcar to work at IBM downtown. In the evenings helped run bridge fundraisers.

In June 1948 mom married our dad Gord Grogan (Lorne Scots Regiment, Brampton) .
As we grew up mom always worked (Sealcraft ) teaching us the value of becoming independent women. She was always there for us with love and encouragement. Juggling work and family, mom was ahead of her time.

In November 1981 Mom married Lloyd Smith and her kind inner spirit flourished and was shared world wide.
Their lovely home in Sun Lakes, Arizona held many memories for friends and family with golf, horseback riding, teaching grandchildren to swim and even take their first steps.

Mom and Lloyd ’s travels to developing countries with CESO, Canadian Executive Services Overseas truly brought to life mom’s legacy. While Lloyd helped countries with their printing business, mom would volunteer with Amnesty International, orphanages or schools to help young children learn to read or just give them a loving hug !

Mom’s kindness made a difference in the lives of so many in Cochabamba, Bolivia; Mumbai, India; San Salvador, El Salvador; Harare, Zimbabwe and more. Wherever they returned she would take special gifts . Her gift of love continued until she was 90 when Lloyd passed away.

Th Masters, Etobicoke, was home for Mom and Lloyd where they had the best time with special friends around the pool, playing tennis or sharing cocktails across the balconies. They new how to ‘Live It Up”

In 2018, at age 96 mom moved to Sunrise, Mississauga. Living on the Reminiscence floor, her Alzheimer’s did not supersede her inner beauty and kindness. She continued to reach out her hands to greet and touch those who cared for her. It was her way of saying thank you.

While mom clearly witnessed significant changes in the world over her 100 year lifespan, her inner spirit remained the same.
She taught us that it doesn’t matter how much money or things, you have in life.
What matters is how you make people feel.
Mom made everyone she met feel special.
We are so proud mom was our mom and she will remain in our hearts, and all who loved her forever.

Our family would like to thank the incredibly kind and loving care partners at Sunrise; her amazing Doctors Sood and Tal at St Joseph’s Health Centre and the Dorothy Ley Hospice Palliative care team, Bayshore and Home and Community Care

In lieu of flowers, if you wish, please make a donation to the Alzheimer’s society of Peel at alzheimer.ca/peel/en/take-action/.donations/honourariums-memoriams.

A Celebration of Kae’s Life will be held Wednesday, August 10th, 4-6 pm at Marina Del Rey, “Malibu Club” 2267 Lake Shore Blvd West , Toronto .
