In memory of

Judy Louie

January 7, 2018

It is with great sadness, that the family of Judy share the loss of their wonderful mother and grandmother. After a multi-year struggle with cancer, Judy passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 7, 2018. She is survived by her three daughters, Tina, Brenda, and Amelia, her much adored grandchildren, Charlotte, and James, and her favorite son-in-law, Kwong.

We fondly remember Judy as an outgoing person, who was a devoted and caring friend. She kept in touch with friends around the world, even those that she had known from her childhood and university days. For her children and grandchildren, she was the original 'tiger mom' and doting grandmother who never, ever, forgot a birthday or anniversary. She instilled in her children, a strong work ethic which she demonstrated in her own life. Emigrating to Canada, on her own, Judy completed her bachelor's degree (BSc, '66), and a double master's degree in Chemistry (MSc, '68) at the University of British Columbia, one of only two women to complete the Master's in Chemistry program for her year. She recounted stories of her lab experiments being sabotaged day after day, with no male deigning to be her lab partner, and so pushed herself to work even harder, to complete experiments designed for two people to execute, in order to graduate on time.

Judy's favorite past-time in her final years was to spoil her grandchildren on every measure. She spent many hours with Charlotte at Eaton's Centre, where Charlotte learned to select her own footwear at two years old. Judy could never say no to, nor scold James, who, in turn, was fiercely devoted to her and the multi-course meals that she tailored to his taste buds.

Judy's devotion to Christ was one of the cornerstones of her life, and helped her through many of her struggles with her cancer.

At Judy's request, a burial service will be held for family in the spring. No funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Judy's name towards the organizations from which she derived so much support: the Canadian Cancer Society's Wheels of Hope program and Kensington Hospice.
