Joy Ellimoottil Joseph
June 14, 1946 -
November 27, 2023
We are extremely saddened to announce the passing of Joy Ellimoottil Joseph on November 27, 2023 at the age of 77. Joy spent his final moments in this world surrounded with the love of his wife Aley, son Joshy, daughter in law Amelia and friend/caregiver Shyjo.
Joy was born in the city of Palai, in Kerala state of India in 1946. He was very accomplished as a student, achieving academic distinction at a state level in chemistry. He spent time as a professor in India, before moving to Canada in 1974 and working as a chemist before turning to real estate.
Joy was devoted to his family, helping others in need and holding a deep and abundant faith in God. He also believed strongly in the power of prayer and the importance of reading the Bible. He was adamant about the need to help those less fortunate, and he did so in many ways. He would support individuals who were new to Canada, those who were in financial need like students and those who were behind in life, and poor people in India who he helped directly or through charities, including one that he founded.
In his later years, Joy was afflicted with diabetes and Parkinson’s disease, which greatly afflicted his mobility and health. He faced these struggles with courage and dignity, and with the everloving support of his wife. In his final years, he was graced with the care of a good family friend, Shyjo, who brought a smile to Joy's face. Even in his darkest days, his health challenges would not be able to take away Joy’s faith, his love and warmth, or his caring for others.
In his younger years before Parkinson’s, Joy was very social and a great friend to many, always willing to make time for anyone who needed his help. He had an infectious laugh and a wonderful sense of humour. His laugh and smile would stay with him to the end.
Joy loved his family. He was happily married for 49 years and cherished his wife Aley dearly. He was an amazing father, a continuing source of inspiration, and a wellspring of love for his son Joshy. He was affectionately known as ‘Papa’ to his grandchildren. His grandson Logan loved the stories that Papa used to tell about his adventures raising animals in India, including a tiger and a cobra. His grandson Ethan loved his grandfather’s smile and loved spending time with him. His granddaughter Alice loved celebrating birthdays and cutting birthday cake with him, and putting a smile on his face which Alice was always able to do. His youngest grandson, Jaden, loved batting balloons around with Papa and cheering him up just by being together.
Joy is survived by his wife Aley, son Joshy and grandchildren, Logan, Ethan, Alice and Jaden, his niece Shanty, and his siblings, nephews and nieces in India. His memory will carry on in their hearts, as well as Joy’s friends and other family members.
