In memory of

Joseph Chong

October 4, 1949 -  August 16, 2025

Joseph Chong, beloved partner, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at North York General Hospital in Toronto on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the age of 75 with family by his side. Born in Kai Ping, China to Stanley and Joyce, Joseph immigrated to Canada in his youth and built a meaningful and varied life in the GTA.

Joseph was a graduate of the Ryerson Institute of Technology (now TMU) and went on to pursue a diverse career. His vocations included work as a transit operator, cab driver, bank officer, bookstore manager, real estate agent, mutual fund advisor, and coach bus driver – his intensive interaction with people being a common thread. He was also an enthusiastic stock market trader with a keen eye for current events and politics, and never one to shy away from stirring a conversation. His predictable presence and sense of humor left a lasting imprint on those he loved.

Above all, Joseph brimmed with pride of his sons. He was actively involved in Andrew and Bryan's upbringing, serving as a Cub Scout leader, softball coach, and tireless chauffeur to countless hockey practices, band rehearsals, and teenage outings. He took great pleasure in passing on his life's lessons, whether as a meticulous driving instructor, or the “gift of the gab.”

Joseph will be deeply missed by his partner, Stella Tran; his former wife Sue Lynn, with whom he shares sons Andrew (Alex) and Bryan (Jasmine); his grandchildren, Bonnie and Rory; his siblings, Gary (Kim), Lenny (Chris), and Stan (Frances; children Riel and Tessa). He will also be remembered with gratitude by his extended family and many friends.

A funeral service for family and friends will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre in Toronto. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the healthcare team at North York General Hospital for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, or for those wishing to make a financial contribution in Joseph’s memory, donations may be made to the North York General Hospital Foundation.

Uncle Chong,

You’ve always carried a positive imprint in my adolescent life even when I only met you one time after band rehearsal. You were in the car and Bryan introduced us for the first time, but you had already knew my name and it meant a lot to me. You were kind, genuine, and funny, just like your son.
I know you will carry your wonderful traits into the next life and continue to share your wisdom with those you cross paths with. Until we meet again.

Sincerely,

Auda Tam

To the Chong family,

Our deepest condolences for your loss. May you find strength and comfort, during this difficult time.

I recall the first time I met Joe at a family gathering. He was kind, approachable, and made me feel at ease using his ‘gift of the gab’ to engage me in conversation and fascinated me with knowledge about the origins of my name.

May his soul rest in peace and may the fond memories you have of him, bring you solace.

Hugs,
Jean Yee & Herbert Kornhuber
