In memory of

Jose Joaquim Pires

June 10, 1935 -  June 28, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of José Joaquim Pires, who died on June 28, 2025, at the age of 90. Born in Parada do Monte, Melgaço, Portugal, on June 10, 1935, José was the son of Cesário Augusto Pires and Rosa Esteves. After leaving Portugal at a young age, he travelled through Spain and into France where he settled and worked for several years before coming to Canada. He went on to have a successful but shortened career as an Ironworker. His passions included gardening and winemaking, but he will be remembered most for his love of family as well as his kindness and generosity to his many close friends and neighbours, who simply called him “Joe”. He is survived by his loving wife, Maria, his adoring son, Manuel (Lan), and his beloved grandchildren, Laura and Matthew. José is also survived by his sisters, Maria and Pura. A funeral service will be held at York Cemetery & Funeral Centre, on Monday, July 7, 2025. Visitation will be held at the York chapel between 10am and 2pm, with service beginning at 2pm, followed by interment. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer Society, Heart & Stroke Foundation, or St. Michael’s Hospital.

Joe will be missed for his kind and generous manner and his amazing garden that he shared with all the neighbours. Joe’s passing has left a space that can’t be filled. Ellerslie won’t be the same without him.

My deepest sympathy to Maria, Manny and family. We used to live on the same street, two houses from Joe and Maria, Joe and Maria are so kind, and they are fondly known to our kids as Papa Joe and Nana Maria. Joe helped us planted tomatoes in our yard, and always brought gifts and treats to the kids for Christmas and Easters (loved those custard tarts). Many times he gave us wine he made and the tomatoes and green beans from his garden. Joe will be missed and his life will be celebrated.

Dear Maria
For the last 28 years, I saw Joe across the fence He always was with a smile and a greeting. He taught me everything about tomatoes and garlic. We would often exchange produce, talk about the weather and he would tell me about his son and wife and their kids. He was good to my son Gary often climbing over the fence to deliver his home made wine or lettuce or onions
. Joe never had a bad word to say about anyone. Joe’s generosity goodness and friendship was given so freely and genuinely. I will miss him and so will all of his neighbours and our neighbourhood.
Rest in Peace dear Joe
