In memory of

Jonathan Gordon Beaton

May 21, 1926 -  April 19, 2021

Gordon passed away peacefully at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Monday, April 19, 2021 at the age of 94. Beloved husband of Mary Ellen (1929-1969) and Irene (1925-2006). Cherished father of Susan Akkerman (the late Gary), Janet Beaton, Sally Brennan (Joe) and Patricia Kierstead (Stan). Loving grandfather to Stephen Akkerman (Natalie), Robert Akkerman (Cathy), Jennifer Dobbs (Ken), Geoff Greenough, David Akkerman (MaryLeigh), Dean Parrinder (Laura), Ryan Parrinder (Elaina) and Erin Vigon. Survived by 18 wonderful great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Gordon will be fondly remembered by his brother-in-law Bruce Holness and his nieces and nephews in Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Ontario. Gordon was born in Kilmuir, Prince Edward Island to parents Malcolm and Charlotte Beaton and was the youngest of 3 children. Gordon is predeceased by his dear sisters Anna MacDonald and Margaret Aitken and their spouses Lester and James. Gordon proudly served Canada during World War 2 and recently received a beautiful certificate acknowledging his military commitment. Dad was a proud employee of General Motors in Oshawa for over 32 years.
Retirement years were spent in Largo, Florida, on his blueberry farm in Prince Edward Island and in Oshawa. Dad was an avid reader with an extensive library collection. Until 2019, he enjoyed weekly golf games with his dear friend of over 60 years, Ralph DeBoo. Throughout his lifetime, Dad drove a variety of cars and delighted in attending car shows with his classic Cadillac. He always enjoyed driving through the country as he was reminded of his rural heritage. Dad was a very compassionate person who provided care and comfort for a number of animals who needed rehabilitation and a safe haven. We wish to thank our St. Elizabeth nurses and personal support workers for their kindness, compassion and expertise, as well as the nurses and doctors at Lakeridge Health Oshawa who were professional, thoughtful and understanding.
At Gordon’s request, there will be no formal service. Following cremation, an interment will take place at Thornton Cemetery, 1200 Thornton Road North, Oshawa in the Veteran’s Section. A Celebration of Gordon’s Life will be held at a later date.
Donations to the R. S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre, Lakeridge Health Oshawa or The Humane Society of Durham Region would be greatly appreciated.

To you, Janet, and your family: we send our fondest wishes at this sad time. As the dedicated teacher of all our sons those many years ago you always had the respect and gratitude of our whole family. And as the RTO Goodwill chairman you gave our elderly mother/grandmother the kindness of your visits and flowers. We and the boys will always appreciate your attending her funeral and reminiscing with them about school days at Kathleen Rowe School. Although we did not know your father, his obituary paints a picture of an interesting and active man whose sense of goodness and humanity you obviously inherited. Our warmest thoughts are with you.
