In memory of

John Kelvin Caldwell

August 28, 1929 -  February 12, 2024

Caldwell, John Kelvin, FCA, died peacefully on February 12th, 2024, in his 95th year. Predeceased by his loving wife of 68 years Theresa (Zoccano). He will be deeply missed by his son Tony (Martha Durdin) and his beloved grandchildren Julian and Adrienne.

John was born and grew up in Haileybury, Ontario, and came to Toronto in 1948 after a brief career as a hard rock miner to join Peat Marwick, now KPMG. He was one of the last of the generation to apprentice as a Chartered Accountant. He spent his entire career at the firm, practicing in Toronto and Montreal, and retired in 1992 as a Senior Tax Partner. Following retirement John attended the 2-year chefs’ course at George Brown, prompting Theresa to abandon the kitchen.

John’s great loves were Theresa, his family, skiing, and music. An accomplished jazz pianist, he might have been happier playing in a smokey bar had he not been an accountant. He and Theresa lived well, travelled widely and were lifelong subscribers to the Canadian Opera Company and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Many thanks to his devoted caregivers Anabella Nabua and Antonia Cruz, who cared for him full time following a serious stroke in August of 2000.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Family and friends may gather at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre- 375 Mount Pleasant Road on Monday, February 26th from 2-4 pm. For online condolences, please visit www.etouch.ca.

Jonathan Spencer (Son of a former partner)

I've just seen John's obituary. My father David Spencer worked alongside John in Montreal at Peat Marwick and developed a deep admiration for John's professionalism. He and Teresa were lifelong friends of my parents David and Margaret Spencer, both now gone. He was a fine, cultured man and it was a pleasure to know him. On behalf of my parents and my family we convey our deepest sympathies to you Tony and to your family.
