In memory of

Giovanni "John" Cannella

August 22, 1942 -  August 12, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Giovanni “John” Cannella, who left us peacefully on August 12, 2025, just ten days shy of his 83rd birthday.

Born on August 22, 1942, in Villafranca Sicula, Agrigento, Sicily and son of Michele and Rosaria. In 1967, John came to Canada and built a career defined by dedication and leadership. He spent many years as Vice President at Canadian Tire before continuing his professional journey with the Toronto Cricket Club. Outside of work, John was a devoted reader and an avid artist who found great joy in painting beautiful sceneries.

John was predeceased by his beloved wife; Elizabeth and his younger brother: Giuseppe. He is survived by his loving brother Antonino (Graziella), his niece Rose (Robert) and his nephew Michael (Chiara), as well as his great-nieces and great-nephews: Michael, Cassia, Anthony, Laila, Chloe, and Noemi. He will be remembered fondly by his extended family and many friends for his warmth, intelligence, and creativity.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sunnybrook Hospital or St. Michael’s Hospital in John’s memory.

From our earliest days, I had the privilege of meeting Giovanni when he arrived in Montreal 50+years ago. As longtime family friends through the Cannella–Cappellino connection since settling in Canada, we always found Giovanni and his wife to be approachable, kind, and genuinely welcoming.

We are deeply saddened by his passing.

It is our heartfelt wish that he is now reunited with his beloved wife and embraced by the Lord.

Giovanni, may you rest in peace.
