In memory of

Joao Joaquim Estragadinho

July 15, 1929 -  July 14, 2021

It is with great sadness that the family of Joao (John) Joaquim Estragadinho born July 15, 1929, in Sao Cristovao, Alentejo, Portugal, announce his passing away on Wednesday July 14, 2021 in Toronto Canada at the age of 91.
He is survived by his wife Idilia, daughter Gigi and many dear family members, including siblings, nieces, nephews and close friends.
John came to Canada in 1965 where he, his wife and daughter started a new life in Toronto. Later they sponsored many family members who also chose a new life in Canada.
John was originally a baker and often used his skills to bake bread for family meals. He worked for the public Transit system in Lisbon where he heard stories about going to Canada. After immigrating to Canada, he spent his working life until retirement, at St Michael’s Hospital.
Throughout his life he was always a hard-working individual, focused on ensuring the best possible future for his family. He was proud to be a Canadian citizen and to see so many of his extend family members also thrive in their adopted home – Canada.
Some of John’s favourite things were spending time with his family, eating fish and chips, cold beers and afternoon naps…
In his later years John suffered from various health issues including a diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease. Despite his health he had a strong will to live. His steady quiet presence and calm demeaner will be greatly missed.
A visitation service will be hosted on Monday Jul 19 from 12:00noon – 2pm
If desired donations to the Parkinson's Canada would be appreciated www.parkinson.ca

John who I used to call "My Mister" when I was a little girl, was always a wonderful family friend. I have so many happy memories as a child visiting John, Idilia and Gigi and sharing so much together. John always welcomed us into his home with open arms, warmth, care and an interest in our lives and how we were doing.

As immigrants in Canada, our families had so much in common and we celebrated so many good times, shared many reflections on life in Portugal and reflected often on the privilege of having come to Canada and establishing a meaningful life for our families through the sacrifices made.

I have nothing but fond memories of John and of Gigi and Idilia. My family's condolences go to you Idilia and Gigi and I know that John's gentle presence will always be with you!
