Joan Margaret McBurney passed away peacefully at the Thorntonview Long Term Care Home on September 22, 2024, at the remarkable age of 104. She has now gone to rejoin her beloved husband, Robert William McBurney, who passed in 1996.

She was predeceased by her son Brian (2015), her daughter-in-law Cherryl (2012), and her son-in-law Robert Ferguson (2005). She was also predeceased by her cherished sister Doris (1999) and brother in law Wally Annetts (2009).

Joan was born in London, England, on September 19, 1920. She came to Canada aboard the Queen Elizabeth 1 as a courageous young war bride in January of 1945, with her baby son Keith, who was just seven months old.

Her grandchildren Jacqui (Mike), Michael (Jodi), Greg, Kevin, Amanda (Josh), Neil (Liisa), Michelle (Paul), and Ryan will forever cherish her memory. Joan was also a proud great-grandmother to 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Pine Hills Funeral Centre, 625 Birchmount Road, Scarborough, on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. A visitation hour will precede the service, from noon until 1 p.m. followed by the funeral service at 1 p.m. There will be an interment service and then a luncheon to celebrate Joan’s life.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at the Thorntonview Long Term Care Home for their compassionate care.

If so desired, memorial donations to the Hospital for Sick Children or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

Joan's loving spirit and gentle kindness will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Joan McBurney will always be remembered for her gentle ways and kindness to all of us and her wonderful sense of humour. She was a loving mother, and a true friend. She never said anything bad about anyone. Her sweet face glowed with love especially for her grandchildren. I loved her soft English accent and her soothing voice. Joan you are an inspiration, an example of how to live a good life. May you rest in peace.

Janice, Keith and family. Please accept our deepest condolences for your loss. I just now learned of your mothers' passing. Our thoughts are with you. Your mom was a special lady and I have fond memories of being treated like one of the family anytime I happened to be at the house with Brian back in the '60s. Sorry for your loss.
