Jean Evangeline Critchlow Hassan
December 9th, 1934 to September 20th, 2022

It is with the deepest sorrow that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Mother, Jean Evangeline Critchlow Hassan. Mother of beauty, Mother of hope, Mother of strength, Mother of youth, she passed away silently, peacefully, and surrounded by love on September 20th, 2022, under a beautiful blue sky on a warm and sunny afternoon.

Our Jean was the guiding light for so many who drew upon her energy and her never-ending joy of life. She showed us the way to adventure with her exuberance and never took no for an answer from those who felt that they could not make time to stop and really enjoy all that this planet has to offer. Music, great food, and energetic conversation were at the heart of our sweet Mother. She left home at the age of 18 when she traveled to the UK to become a nurse. Along with learning the medical arts, she fell in love with Europe with a particularly soft spot for Ireland. She also fell in love and started a family while in the UK. Her family was her everything.

Jean was the youngest of three. Her Sister Sheila and Brother Ronan have lived in her heart since their passing. She felt comfort in the belief that they would reunite in paradise. Jean is survived by her three loving daughters Asha Hassan, Amina Hassan, and Sonya Hassan-Carey, and her six extremely cherished grandchildren, Najja Coley, Kaedin Szelei-Miko, Nigel Carey, Cheyenne Carey, Sharissa Szelei-Miko, and Julian Carey and the pride of her life, her 3 great-grandchildren, Elijah Batara Szelei, Mia Coley and Aubrey Coley. She also kept close in her heart, her nieces and nephews, Rona Barnette-Passard, Patricia Newland, Joan Barnette, Nigel Critchlow, Wayne Critchlow, and her beloved Michael Critchlow who also waits for his auntie in paradise. We all feel loved and safe in the arms of all of our friends and family who are here to support us during this time.

I met Mrs.H, momma Hassan and her family in 1975. Our families bonded, and enjoyed activities, like going on picnics together. From that point, the Hassan family has been an important part of my life, as well as my family’s. I remember going to the Hassan home after school where momma Hassan always made room for me at the dinner table. It’s an honour to have such life-long friendships.
I will miss you momma Hassan. May you Rest In Peace. ❤️ Sonia

Dear Mom,

This one is a tough one. How to say goodbye to the person who gave me life. I cannot. I can still hear your voice today, and feel the touch of your hand on mine.
You have really lived. I cannot think of anyone who has enjoyed all of this planet as much as you have. From Guyana to Jamaica, to England, to Canada, and everything in between. You gave me this motivation and inspiration to grab a bag and see all of Europe without a care in the world. You are a fighter, and though I did not always agree, you fought for what you believed in and that is admirable. My memories of you are so vivid. Looking out the window for you to come home in England, you getting us ready for school in Jamaica, the weekend trips to the beach and hiding with you at your office after school. The dancing and the singing and all of those apple pies. I think we've been to every park in the GTA at some point with a delicious lunch packed to take along. All the time you spent with your grandchildren, never saying no to taking care of all of them. Later as you got more dependent upon us, you never stopped trying to take care of yourself as best you could. But I did enjoy our waltzing and I did enjoy taking care of you. I enjoyed watching you keep control of Jean. Always in control to the bitter end. I love that about you. I miss you, mom. I will waltz with you again, I promise.

Dearest Mom (AKA - Jeanie Girl, E-Jay, Granny, GG and many other names of endearment).
I miss you so much. You will forever be my favourite dance partner. On your birthday (celebrated on both Dec. 9 and 10th), I will do the jitterbug to big-band swing music and wine-down-low to some calypso beats. No one can shimmy their shoulders like you! I'll eat some cake and drink a GOOD CUP OF TEA in honour of you and all the of years love, life and laughter. I know that you are in a better place, free of pain and suffering. Your spirit is dancing in heaven, you laughter is in the wind and the flash of those glassy green eyes is in the bright sunlight. I feel you everywhere and though I can't touch you today and I can feel your head on my shoulder and your hand in mine. Each of us, your family and friends, has a smile on our lips when we call your name. HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Load and loads of love, twists and twirls from me to you on your special day and always. With all my heart, Asha Weris

Hi Mom,

It’s been 1 year. Also the 61st Wedding anniversary for you and Dad so don’t forget to give him a hug🥰

I have not danced since you left. I have stood here waiting for you to come and make me dance.

So many things I need you for. Hugs, to lend me 20 dollars as you so loved to do, dances, brush my tangled hair, your little dinner you would share with me. So many things. I need you back for just a bit more time. We all do.

The kids miss you so much. We are trying to get our new home soon. But you will always know where to find us. I’ll leave a light on for you.

I’ll see you today. We can talk more then. Love you mommy. The little one💕

Missing you Mom. You brought so many gifts to our lives: Dancing, singing, theater, sewing, travel, adventure, laughter, passion, creativity, naughtiness, love, generosity, loyalty, hard work, bravery and so much more. Your family meant everything to you. A day doesn't go by without a memory of you. You're forever in my heart, mind and soul. I'm still dancing with you and I feel your gentle touch. Loving you forever and knowing you're happy till we meet again. ❤🙏🏾
