In memory of

Jane Chun Shu Lee

September 14, 1930 -  September 22, 2025

It is with great love and sadness that we announce the passing of Jane Chun Shu Lee on Monday, September 22, 2025. She had joyfully and proudly celebrated her 96th birthday on September 14th.

Jane was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Kwong-Yeen Lee; her mother Kook Lau Chan; her father Che Chou Chan; her father-in-law Ross Ming Shuy Louie; her uncle Moon Fun Chin; her aunt Elsie Chin; her brother Yin Fong Chan; and her sisters Yung Ngoi (Lin Din) Toy and Joyce (James) Ngai.

She is survived by her devoted children David (Susan), Mary and Basil (Fernanda). She was a proud grandmother to Jason (Lily), Andrew, Austin, Amanda (Carl), Adam and Alexander. She will also be remembered by her sister-in-law Helen Chan. She was an aunt, grandaunt and great grandaunt to her extended families: Chan, Toy, Ngai, Beaton, Campos, Hernandez, Lee and Louie.

Jane was born in Toishan, China, and immigrated to Toronto from Hong Kong in early 1957. She wed Ken in December of that same year. While raising her young family, she studied accounting and English as a Second Language. She also worked part-time at Benvenuto Place, Wells Fargo and a make-up factory. Later, she began her career as a statistician at the Combined Insurance Company of America in 1974, where she remained until retiring in 1994. Jane balanced her career with the demands of caring for her husband, father-in-law, children and mother. She worked tirelessly to keep her home running, often preparing meals for the next day after long hours of work.

In retirement, Jane found joy in travel, especially cruises. Her favourite cruise was to the Baltics. She hosted weekly mahjong games in her home and attended weekly games at friends’ homes. She loved mahjong! She stayed active through line dancing and seniors’ aerobics. Everyday by 6:30 a.m., she was in the swimming pool completing her water exercises.

Family brought Jane the greatest happiness. She treasured every moment spent with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed preparing extensive meals for her family. Food was another source of joy—tasting, critiquing and sharing it with loved ones. Her home became the setting for countless gatherings, parties and celebrations. She had a discernible palate for good food. She also
enjoyed discovering new restaurants throughout the city. Jane was, at heart, a food connoisseur!

In March 2025, Jane entered the Palliative Care Unit at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. She faced health challenges believed to be lung cancer, though it was not formally diagnosed. Around the same time she experienced the gradual fading of her memories, a challenge met with quiet strength by her and her loved ones. During her stay, she discovered a new sense of calm through bird and squirrel watching. She enjoyed the therapeutic garden and live music offered at the hospital.

The family is grateful to Jane’s caregivers and staff at Sunnybrook for their kindness and support. In lieu of flowers, her family would like you to consider donations be made to the Palliative Care Unit at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in her memory.

A celebration of Jane’s life will be held on Saturday, October 11th at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre - 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto, with Visitation at 10:30 am followed by a Service in our Chapel at 11:30 am. Burial in Mount Pleasant Cemetry. With Reception from 1 - 3:30 back at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre.
