HYMAS – Jane Alison, May 1, 2018. Alison Hymas was born in Calgary January 19, 1932. Longtime resident of Toronto, Ontario. Wife to Dean Dewey (1971-1976). Beloved stepmother of Paige (Dewey) and Jaime Cudmore, Oshawa, Ontario, and Helena (Zappe) and Douglas Dewey, of Thornwood, New York. Beloved NanNan to Benjamin Wilbrink, and his children, Anabelle, Violet and Lily; Mitchell Wilbrink, and his daughter, Rhea; and Alexandra Cudmore. Beloved NanNan to Frances (Dewey) and Timothy Ginski, and their sons, Karol and Hubert; Anna (Van Hecke) and Dean Dewey and their sons, Dean and Achilles; and George, Maximilian, Monica, Jackson, Doris, Jane, Vera and Brogan Dewey. Survived by brother, Robert Hymas, and his children, Penny (Hymas) Blackwell, and son, John Blackwell; Jackie (Burke) and Rodney Hymas and daughter, Kirbi (Hymas) and husband, Steven Boyce; Carolyn (Hymas) and husband, Byron Templeton and their daughters, Roberta (Templeton) and fiancé, Jared Watson, Jocelyn (Templeton) and husband, Travis Wasko, and Roselyn (Templeton) and husband, Griffin Thoni.
Alison earned a Bachelor of Interior Design, School of Architecture, Univ. of Manitoba, 1954. She founded Alison Hymas Design Associates in 1972; major projects include municipal officers, City of Brampton; head offices, General Motors; transit stations, OC Transpo, Ottawa; GO Transit, Toronto; and Famous Players, show rooms, Toronto. Alison was President of the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (1985-1987); Founding Director of the Design Exchange (1986-1991) and the Toronto Arts Awards (1985-1989); Treasurer of the Canadian Society of Decorative Arts (1996-2000); and Board member of the Ontario Craft Council (1998-2002). Elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1978, for which she served as President & CEO (2002-2006). DMV, the Royal Ontario Museum and member of the Canadian Opera Volunteers Committee. Ms. Hymas was a writer, speaker, panelist, curator, jury member and consultant on topics of design and the arts. Alison was an avid gardener, a world traveler, and collector of contemporary and indigenous art.
Services at The Simple Alternative, 1057 Brock Road, Pickering, ON, on Tuesday May 8, at 1:30 p.m. Interment following at Duffin Meadows Cemetery, 2505 Brock Road North, Pickering, ON. Flowers gratefully declined. If friends desire, memorial gifts may be directed to the charity of their choice.
