In memory of

Jan Potmesil

October 21, 1947 -  September 13, 2025

Jan (also known as Honza in Czech) passed away at his Etobicoke home, surrounded by the love of his wife of nearly 50 years, Eva; his children, Eva Jr. (“Evička”) with husband Allan, and Jan Jr. (“Honzík”); and his sister-in-law, Zdenka. He will also be deeply cherished by his family and friends in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, as well as in North America.

Jan found purpose and joy in his career as a CT/Angio Technologist in the Radiology Department at Humber Memorial Hospital, later Humber River Hospital, where his colleagues became his second family.

An avid skier and tennis player, Jan also loved to travel, spend time outdoors, and read everything from international news to Czech gossip magazines. He shared his passion for nature and adventure with his children, creating cherished memories that will last forever.

He loved visiting his home country, the Czech Republic where he spent time with family and friends walking around Prague, visiting cafes in Poděbrady, hiking in the Krkonoše (Giant) mountains and stopping by his favourite pubs.

Jan was a smart, kind and gentle man who will be missed by many.

We are deeply grateful for the kindness and support of our friends and family during this time.
Our heartfelt thanks also go to the exceptional teams at Humber River Hospital and Integrated Palliative Care for their compassionate care and support throughout Jan’s illness.

The celebration of Jan's life will be on October 11th, 2025, starting with the service at Church of Christ the King Anglican Church, followed by snacks and cheers at the Mascot Brewery, both in Etobicoke.

Donations can be made on Jan's behalf to the Canadian Cancer Society or Dorothy Ley Hospice. Or, in lieu of donations, the best way to honour Jan is to cherish your loved ones, celebrate everything and be kind to everyone!

We will always remember Jan in our hearts.

For those that cannot join us in person, the Memorial Service for Jan Potmesil can be accessed through the YouTube link below.
The livestream will go live Saturday, October 11th at 2:00 pm Eastern time (i.e. Toronto, Canada time).

The times I met/seen him he was always so full of happiness and laughter. Age was just a number he would party just like the rest of us. I am grateful to have had the pleasure to meet him. My deepest condolences go out to the family, sending you all love in this extremely difficult time.

I will always remember Jan as an incredibly kind man. Always ready to be a good listener or share a story, he was fun to chat with and reminisce good memories. He was a great person to be around and I will remember the good times at the annual birthday cottage weekend for Johnny. He was a party animal just like us and also a great ping pong player. His legacy is deep in my heart.
