In memory of

Jim Gijbels

April 2, 1929 -  May 10, 2018

James (Jim) Gijbels passed away peacefully at Grace Manor on Thursday May 10, 2018 in Brampton, Ontario after a 12-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Jim was a loving husband, father, Opa, uncle and friend, who was known for his love, generosity, and enthusiastic outlook on life. He leaves his loving wife Mieke, children Denise (Al) and Marcel (Robyn), and granddaughters Jessica, Julia, and Alexis. He will also be missed by his brother Fred and his nieces and nephews.

Jim was born on April 2, 1929 in Muntok, Indonesia to Hans and Cornelia Gijbels. After World War II, he worked briefly as a Ferryman and as a Colonel in the Dutch Army before working in the Australian Outback country for 3 years. Upon returning to the Netherlands, he met his future wife Mieke, who he proposed to after only 6 dates! Shortly thereafter, he and Mieke immigrated to Canada where he worked in Hospitality Services, most notably at the Tam O'Shanter Golf and Country Club and as the proud owner of JJ’s Café. In his retirement, he and Mieke enjoyed travelling, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. Jim will be remembered by all for his generosity, his love for food, and his zest for life, and would want us all to celebrate life.

Visitation will be held at the Meadowvale Funeral Centre, 7732 Mavis Road, Brampton on Monday, May 14, 2018 from 5:00 – 8:00pm. A funeral service will be held at the Meadowvale Funeral Centre Chapel on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 starting at 10:30am, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Peel.

Jim was always a man ready to laugh and to talk. His lifetime passion was always food – if he wasn’t cooking or serving it, then he was growing it, or just simply enjoying it! He was the epitome of the self-made man – came to Canada to start life with his new wife, found work, established a home, raised a family, and eventually came to run his own business – JJ Café! Yet,no matter how hard he worked, he always made time for his family. I feel fortunate to have become part of his extended family – with so many fond memories and so much laughter through the years.

Jim, I’m grateful for the time with you, and celebrate your life well lived!

Opa,

I know you are in a better place now and am grateful for the time I had with you. You were loving, generous, and a true gentleman. You always had a smile on your face and a twinkle in your eye like you were sharing a special secret with me. You taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and a positive attitude and were the best Opa a girl could wish for.
With Love,

Jessica

I've had the pleasure of knowing Jim for 22 years. I will always remember his smile and laughter that will fill up a room. Jim made me feel welcome in the family the moment I met him. I enjoyed our talks and listening to his stories and laughing at his silly jokes. Jim had a love and passion for life and for his family, that was demonstrated in everything he did. Thanks Jim (and Mieke) for raising an amazing Son. Marcel is so much like you in many ways, we often say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and in this case it's a big compliment! Sadly Alzheimer's robbed him of that last 10 years but I am thankful I have so many memories of him before that, memories of what an amazing man he was.

I love you and will miss you terribly.

Love your favourite Daughter-in-law
xoxo
