In memory of

James Walter Ramsay

July 21, 1931 -  November 30, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father James (Jim) Ramsay at the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre at the age of 91. He is survived by his two children, Allan (Laura) and Siobhan (Carlo); his beloved grandchildren, Connor and Caelan; his brother, Bob Ramsay of Toronto; and sisters, Joan Leitch and Penny Baker of Vancouver.

He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Bridget (Bridie), in 2020; and by his brother, Peter, in 2022.

Jim was born in Victoria and raised in Edmonton where he worked in the family flower shop growing up. He enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and served in Korea. After returning home, he moved to New York, earning a degree in Economics from NYU. He then settled in Toronto where he met and married Bridie and began a long career in the public and private sector that took him on travels around the world. He took great pride in his many roles including Commissioner of the Ontario Pavilion at Expo '67 in Montreal and Expo '70 in Osaka, Japan.

From 1968 - 1972, he oversaw the development and opening of Ontario Place. He briefly joined the private sector doing property development before returning to the Provincial government in 1982 as a Deputy Minister in two different Ministries. He then joined the Federal government and served as Chief of Staff in three separate Ministries before 'semi- retiring' in 1993.

Throughout his life, dad was passionate about politics, current affairs, reading, movies and music. He loved nice clothes and always maintained the army discipline of perfectly ironing his shirts and shining his shoes. A great day included reading the paper, watching the news, going for a stroll on Bloor Street to his favourite stores and eating 'real' Chinese food. Although he was known as a tough guy (aka 'Rambo') throughout his career, he was immensely proud of his family and showed a soft side when his grandchildren were born.

The family wishes to express gratitude to the amazing caregivers in the Dorothy Macham Home (DMH) at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre for their compassionate care over the last two and a half years. In memory of Jim, donations to The Alzheimer's Society of Ontario or the Sunnybrook Hospital Veterans Program would be appreciated.

I had the pleasure of working for Jim both during the summer of 66, and as a host at the Ontario Pavilion at Expo 67. We met up again at the Ontario Pavilion’s 50th anniversary, at which we shared a table.

Jim will be missed.
