In memory of

James Saunders

July 12, 1923 -  October 12, 2021

Peacefully on Tuesday, October 12th 2021, James Saunders passed away at the age of 98. He was the beloved husband of 75 years to his late wife Dorothy and will be forever missed by his children, Carol (Chris), Paul (Teresa), and Sophie (Lou). “Dedo Jimmy” was an adored and devoted grandfather to Jamie (Susie), Elaine (Jason), Sasha (Ross), Christopher, Jason, and Paul, and much loved by his great-grandchildren Christopher, Sophia, Andrew, and Christian. James was born in the village of Zhelevo in Aegean Macedonia in 1923, the eldest of three. At the age of 13, he immigrated to Canada with his mother Sophia, brother Chris, and sister Sally to join their father Spero in Toronto. A pioneer in protecting Macedonian culture and human rights, James was considered a founding father of the United Macedonians of Canada, an organization that has been central to the development of Canada’s Macedonian community. Alongside his father, James played a leading role in bringing the Macedonian Orthodox Church to Canada, resulting in the establishment of St. Clement of Ohrid Macedonian Orthodox Cathedral in 1962. In his personal life, James was an avid reader, keen historian, and passionate hockey fan. Forever in the hearts of many, he leaves an inspiring legacy for his family, friends, and community.

Private funeral service will be held at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, with private burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Sick Kids Hospital And Princess Margaret Hospital would be appreciated. For online condolences, please visit www.etouch.ca

Carol, with our deepest sympathy to you and your family. Your Dad was a fine gentleman and so well respected in our Canadian Macedonian community. Jim’s fondest memories of your Dad is his presence each Sunday having coffee with his friends around him after Church services. A great role model, he represented the best we could be. May he Rest In Peace and Memories eternal. Jim and Susie Bilkas

Dedo, a steady and strong force who has always been in my life, I’ll miss you and Baba so much. I couldn’t be prouder and warmer from so many amazing memories: the land, you making us get in close to the sheep, the hamburger place there, the compass, being allowed get behind the counter, the pool at Shawnee, Jamie’s and my sleepovers, all family events and finding you there, feeling proud to be so close. So much love and happiness always xoxo

Sending condolences and wishes of peace to you all.
I met your dad while working at Sullivan’s General Store in Ennismore, which my parents owned and operated for 21 years, until 2019.
His visits were usually short and sweet, though always friendly and appreciated.
He will be remembered by many!
Sincerely,
Erin Sullivan
